WIN METHOD --- WINTER BREAK --- HOT STOVE --- HEADED TO 2023 SEASON

The 2022 season is over. Another solid winning season making the playoffs. Sadly another season of getting knocked out of the playoffs and not making the World Series. A good season, yes, to make the playoffs, but not good enough to make the World Series.

The hot stove has been hot and is burning strong. Many big names have changed uniforms so far. The YANKEES re-signed free agent Aaron Judge and signed a top of the rotation starter in free agent Carlos Rodon.

As I told all the WIN METHOD fans in my July 5, 2022 blogpost, Aaron Judge was not going to sign with any other team but the YANKEES. Attaining Rodon is a fine upgrade to the starting rotation.  With the addition of Rodon, the rotation is more balanced with three right handed starters and two left handed starters. Cole, Cortes, Rodon, Louie Louie, and Montas.

With Benintendi lost to free agency there is an opening in left field, I would think and hope the YANKEES will give Oswaldo Cabrera every chance to earn and then hold the left field position. Then there is the infield to deal with. First base as of now is the only infield position set in stone. Anthony Rizzo has first base locked up. There may or may not be a deal coming this winter to help decide the infield spots at second base, third base, and shortstop. But the YANKEES have an abundance of bodies in LeMahieu, Torres, Peraza, Kiner-Falefa, Donaldson, and possible even Volpe to fill the three positions. How things shake out during the winter break and then spring training will eventually tell the story.

The bullpen has many arms and should be no issue throughout the 2023 season, There are a couple of youngsters in the minors who are still developing and who knows just when the light bulb goes off for them and they are ready to make an impact at the major league level.

At the catcher position. Personally, I am looking forward to seeing what left handed hitting catcher Ben Rortvedt will bring to the team. Rortvedt may provide a big surprise. I would  think the YANKEES will not carry three catchers and either Trevino or Higashioka will be gone.

In the minor leagues the YANKEES have a bunch of  fine looking youngsters at all positions, as WIN METHOD as they can be, how they bloom and grow over time will determine their ultimate value.

WIN METHOD fans, I can't say this often enough. You are the smartest and most knowledgeable baseball fans in the world. You make fans at all the other blogs, sites, forums, or whatever look silly. You all, have made the WIN METHOD blog the number one go to site for YANKEE baseball talk and information, You fans are positive, uplifting, and use common sense. All of you KNOW baseball. Around February 2023, this blog will attain one billion five hundred million views, 1,500,000,000. Thank you all, you truly are the greatest YANKEE fans in the world.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS, to each and every one of you wherever you are across this planet. I still get amazed when I look and see the hundreds of countries all of the viewers of the WIN METHOD blog come from. Everyone, have a happy and healthy new year. Lets win a World Series. Let's go Yankees

I bet Brito will out pitch Schmidt in his start. And win the game.

Todays Yankee lineup.

Jhony Brito (R) P

1. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
2. Aaron Judge (R) RF
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. Giancarlo Stanton (R) DH
5. Josh Donaldson (R) 3B
6. Oswaldo Cabrera (S) LF
7. Isiah Kiner-Falefa (R) CF
8. Kyle Higashioka (R) C
9. Anthony Volpe (R) SS

IKF in CF. Higshioka catching. Hicks passed over again? he would be a left bat against a righty?

Andrew J said...

Yes, no Hicks is good, but I wonder why.

okiened said...

Four innings in the books. Judge, Stanton, and Higgy home runs have the Yankees on top 4-0.

Yankeefan2 said...

Jimmy Thames, so far you are right about Brito. He easily outpitched Schmidt going five shutout innings, with two singles and one walk. Struck out six. And if nothing stupid happens, your second comment about him getting the win should also be right.

Evan Donahue said...

Yanks have 6-0 lead thru seven.

will-i-am said...

Final. Yankees win 6-0. Brito sparkling in his first MLB start and win. Five shutout innings and in total command. Could be just what the Yankees needed what with the injuries to three starting pitchers. Bullpen goes final four scoreless innings. Judge, Stanton, and Higashioka each with a HR for a stressless win. Take first series of season. Should have swept however.

coryankee said...

Next up for the Yankees is a three game series at the Stadium against the Phillies. Cortes, German, and Cole listed to start.

Cory said...

First time ever Yankee fact. This is the first time in Yankee history that the Yankees had two shutout games in their first three games to start a season.

Eddie OConnor said...

Remember when WIN METHOD told us a while ago to watch for Brito in the future. Brito was just in his teens back then.

Patrick Healy said...

The lineup with Cabrera and Volpe with defense, speed, and enthusiasm have instilled life into the lineup. Plus have LeMahieu back are all pluses. Looking forward to the arrival and youth of Peraza and Dominguez at some point during the season. Volpe has natural instincts just like Jeter had.

Gil McKenzie said...

Yankee newest addition closed out today's game with two scoreless innings. Nice low leverage pickup for 26th man.

Neil Golub said...

This three game series with Phillies have night games today and tomorrow at 7pm and Wednesday at 1pm.
Cortes, German, Cole Yankee starting pitchers.

Tony Manchu said...

Eddie OConnor. I didn't remember that comment about Brito. I did find it, and it was in a blogpost. February 2018. More great insight from WIN METHOD.

Deb F said...

Eddie OConnor, thanks. You saved me the time for searching for the post, This blog and the information from posters here is best in the world. No one knows baseball better than WIN METHOD and the fans who contribute to this message board. No other site is even second best. You would probably have to go down to eleventh on the list because the WIN METHOD would fill on the spots on the top ten list.

Todays Yankee lineup.

Nestor Cortes (L) P

1. DJ LeMahieu (R) 3B
2. Aaron Judge (R) CF
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. Giancarlo Stanton (R) DH
5. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
6. Franchy Cordero (L) RF
7. Aaron Hicks (S) LF
8. Jose Trevino (R) C
9. Anthony Volpe (R) SS

Franchy Cordero in RF. Hicks in LF. LeMahieu at 3B with Donaldson off day. Phillies come in with three game losing streak and are to good to keep losing. Yankee bats need to keep scoring.

Chad Copely said...

Think positive, sweep the Phillies and send them home with a six game losing streak.

Domenic said...

If anything Franchy Cordero puts another left handed bat in the lineup. Only problem it took a better left handed bat out of the lineup in Cabrera -- plus Cabrera is a better fielder.

Final. Yankees win 8-1. Cortes goes five innings allowing 1 run for the win. Bullpen goes four scoreless innings. Hamilton, Loaisiga, and Holmes. Rizzo and Torres with home runs.

Todays Yankee lineup.

Domingo German (R) P

1. DJ LeMahieu (R) 1B
2. Aaron Judge (R) DH
3. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
4. Giancarlo Stanton (R) RF
5. Josh Donaldson (R) 3B
6. Aaron Hicks (S) LF
7. Isiah Kiner-Falefa (R) CF
8. Kyle Higashioka (R) C
9. Anthony Volpe (R) SS

Except for Volpe, this is a throwback lineup. All right-handed lineup. Hicks whining and sniveling got him two back to back games. What a disgrace he is. Yet, I root for him and hope he performs when it matters most.

candycane said...

Yanks down 2-0 after 3.

muchomachoman said...

German goes 4 2/3 giving up 4 runs when King comes in to get last out but not before giving up 2 RBI singles. Yankees trail 4-0 after 5.

will-i-am said...

Final. Yankees lose 4-1. Really never in it. German takes the loss. Series tied at one with rubber game tomorrow at one o'clock. Cole starting. We have to much talent for Donaldson, Hicks, and IKF to ever be in the same game.

Todays Yankee lineup.

5. Josh Donaldson (R) 3B
6. Oswaldo Cabrera (S) LF
7. Franchy Cordero (L) RF
8. Jose Trevino (R) C

The canceling of tomorrows game has screwed up the rotation. The Yankees need another starter. for 4/11. A rain out would buy some time.

Augie Defonce said...

No word on Donaldson as of now. It is a hamstring issue, and did not seem severe.

Tom Wilson said...

Cory, the canceling of today's game a day before the game was to be played was a foolish "rush to judgement decision" that the fans of both teams did not deserve. The worst of all, not playing today, has a negative affect on the Yankee rotation going forward.. A very bad decision by the powers that be in Baltimore.

Lori Kelly said...

Tom Wilson, what the Orioles did was a farce. How many fans had their plans turned upside down because a game was cancelled because of a chance of a storm during game time. There was no storm before game time and as of now still no storm. The game, at this point would be in the last couple of innings right now. Not a drop of rain.

German tomorrow. He needs to come up big and earn a win.

NJYANKEE said...

Schmidt and German were given a starting rotation spot. So far Schmidt has failed, but he will get more chances to turn things around. German is a question mark, his first start was not awful, and he will make his second start tonight. Then there is Brito who was given a chance where he excelled. The Yankees foolishly sent Brito back to the minors. A rained out game forced the Yankees to recall Brito for a second start, and he excelled again. Hopefully the Yankees will now move forward keeping Brito in the starting rotation.

Hoyle said...

Only nine games into the season but the Yankees are 6-0 in games started by Cole, Cortes, and Brito, and 0-3 in games started by German or Schmidt,

will-i-am said...

Final. Yankees lose 3-2. Yankees blow a game with pathetic when it matters most production. Many, many chances, and many, many failures. German had nothing, giving up 2 runs in 3 innings. Bullpen takes the loss allowing just 1 run in five innings. No one can really say for sure, but Kiner-Falefa playing third base may have cost Yankees 2 runs on ground balls down the line that a real third baseman --LeMahieu or Cabrera-- could have made plays on. But that is baseball. The Yankees scored 2 first inning runs, had men on 2nd and 3rd with no outs and did not score again -- and I mean in the first inning and the rest of the game. Worst was men on third and no outs in the 8th inning and came up empty. Very sad night.

Yanks23245 said...

It looks like the Yankees are just plodding along. Don't forget, they have started the season with 3/5 of their starting pitchers on the DL.

Argy M said...

My take from last night, and Guy Padikian in his comments about the lineup he posted the lineup last night was dead on target, Boone said Cabrera had clearly won the left field job coming out of spring training, Through the first 10 games the Cabrera has been rested 3 times. Could he have made a difference last night batting in the middle of the lineup behind Stanton, especially in the first inning? We’ll never know, but if they keep forcing IKF, into the lineup, it seems like Boone doesn't truly know what he is doing. Cabrera at 3B instead of IKF gives the lineup another left handed bat, a better defensive player, and a faster more determined player with much more to offer.

muchomachoman said...

It was a horrible game to watch...pathetic offense and zero ability to hit when it mattered most. That first inning, after two runs in and men on second and third with no outs, and can't get another run in. Plus the failure to score after Torres triple to start the eighth, with Judge, Rizzo, and Stanton failing to get Torres home, was a killer. So none WIN METHOD. A shame I say, a crying shame.

This message board blog has so many people who post here. People with vast baseball knowledge and wisdom. A vast majority of us are positive and believe that management of any team has inside information that is not known by the general public. The posters don't harp on attacking players, coaches, management, and owners. There are times however when we do, not too often, but we do. It usually occurs after any of the previously mentioned parties fails over and over and over at what appears to us fans as "what the hell are you doing".

Last night was a prime example -- the Yankees were playing a good team with a top left-handed pitcher starting for them. The norm is to try to get left-handed batters into the lineup, which the Yankees do not have that many of. Using third base as the spot in question -- the Yankees had three options, 1 LeMahieu, a good hitting, good fielder, 2. Kiner-Falefa, a poor hitting, poor fielder, or 3 Cabrera, a good hitting, good fielder. Now the decision, LeMahieu is the better hitter of the three, Cabrera second best, and Kiner-Falefa the worst. As to fielding, LeMahieu and Cabrera are both better than Kiner-Falefa. Next, LeMahieu and Kiner-Falefa are both right-handed hitters, Cabrera is a switch-hitter, therefore a left-handed bat for this game. In my opinion, of the three players available, there are two options, LeMahieu or Cabrera. In reality, Kiner-Falefa is not a logical choice and should only be uses if both LeMahieu and Cabrera cannot play at all. The player chosen to start the game was Kiner-Falefa. This was a gigantic failure by the people in charge, a dereliction of duty, and just plain stupid -- WHY? WHY? WHY?

I can understand you have to rest these prima donna millionaire ball players once in awhile, but they should not be rested when you are facing the opponents best pitcher(s). It's only two games, but it also was two wins. With three of five starters not throwing a game yet this season and our fifth and sixth starters failing so far, it was a big boost to have Brito step up and do what he has done so far.

Saul Irving said...

Brito should have the edge over teams that see him for the first time. We will know more later in the season when teams see him for the second time. My impression is based on the (WIN METHOD) comment back from Feb 2018, and seeing him pitch. The demeanor and stature he shows is very positive.

Todays Yankee lineup.

Jhony Brito (R) P

1. Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
2. Aaron Judge (R) CF
3. Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
4. Giancarlo Stanton (R) DH
5. Willie Calhoun (L) RF
6. Oswaldo Cabrera (S) 3B
7. Franchy Cordero (L) LF
8. Kyle Higashioka (R) C
9. Anthony Volpe (R) SS

Four lefty bats again. I'd like to see how Brito pitches with some big run support.

Sam Anderson said...

Saul Irving, good post and I second your thoughts.

Final. Yankees lose 11-2. Brito gives up 9 first inning runs. Everything he threw the Twins hit hard. Yankees with just 4 hits. Volpe a single and Rizzo with a single and two solo home runs. All meaningless. Try again tomorrow.

A learning experience for Brito tonite? We will see what happens in his next start.

Izy Hernandez, so true. A test for Brito and his resilience. A good bounce back effort and we all can move forward.

There is nothing worse than when an autocratic like Manfred creates a stupid rule, like the 15-second to challenge rule, but then does not enforce it when it comes up. Then, as with all autocrats, he doesn't allow you to challenge or appeal. The umpire clearly made the out call on Hicks dropped fly ball in centerfield. Hicks threw the ball to second base making for a double play ending the inning. All the players left the field, Cleveland manager Francona DID NOT challenge the call. Over and out, done with. When Cleveland showed the replay on the scoreboard and it showed Hicks did not catch the fly ball, the Indian fans booed and the umpires illegally changed the game on their own accord in VIOLATION of the 15 second challenge rule. This is not American. To a degree, Manfred and his ignorant cohorts are making a mockery of the game.

Final. Yankees lose 4-3. Cortes goes seven innings of solid pitching allowing just 2 runs. Holmes comes in for the 8th inning and allows 2 runs and takes the loss. Yankee runs all solo home runs from Volpe, Judge, and Stanton. A bad loss in a game that the Yankees should have won. I'll let it go at that.

Steve(winstheonlystat) said...

4-3 loss was a heartbreaker. Wasted a great start from Cortes. Not to pick on Rizzo, but what he did in yesterdays game was meaningless production ( 2 HRs and a single) when it did not matter, while what he did today in a one run game was important and he contributed nothing, striking out three times.

Final. Yankees win 6-1. German came up big today. Pitching one of his best games, German went 6 1/3 innings allowing just 1 run while striking out 11 Twinkie batters. Yankees got home runs from Higashioka, a 2 run shot and a solo home run from Rizzo. A 2 rbi double by Stanton and an rbi single from LeMahieu. King finished game going 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Yankees now have a chance to come away with split of this series with Cole starting tomorrow.

Boston/Yankee said...

1. Volpe ss

3. Judge rf
4. Rizzo 1b
5. Stanton dh
6. Cabrera lf
7. Torres 2b
8. Higashioka/Trevino c
9, Bader cf

Volpe is an ideal leadoff hitter, speed, contact, stolen base, etc
LeMahieu situational hitter, hit & run, hit behind the runner contact, etc
Judge has two men in front of him which should almost double his coming to bat with men on base
Rizzo protection for Judge, contact hitter
Stanton is Stanton, when hot can be devastating
Cabrera switch hitter that when the pitcher thinks he can relax, will kill you
Torres likely best spot for Torres similar to Cabrera
Hihashioka/Trevino either can be a threat at any time or not
Bader speed leading to the top of the order with sneaky power

I had some time on my hands and started to play 'thinking manager'.

6. Willie Calhoun (L) DH
7. Oswaldo Cabrera (S) RF
8. Jose Trevino (R) C
9. Aaron Hicks (S) LF

Boston/Yankee, I like your lineup better than Boone/s. Some stat fraud likely told Boone that the best hitter needs to bat second. In the history of baseball the best hitter(s) usually hit 3rd, 4th, & 5th. Wake up Boone, smell the coffee, see the light, and think like you may know baseball.

Lou Lis said...

When you see how LeMahieu hit today in the five hole, I will have to totally agree with Boston/Yankee and see Volpe lead off with LeMahieu in the two hole.

Reflection on the Yankee lineup today and Hicks in it. Why in heck would Boone play Hicks over Cordero when Cordero is at his best hitting against right handed pitching, and have reiterated the same since joining the Yankees. Making my point, Hicks came to the plate three time today and never hit the ball, striking out all three times. I'll bet my life that Cordero could not have done worse. What is wrong with Boone and his thought process? Is he that out of it, baseball wise?

WIN METHOD said...

Boston/Yankee, I am going to borrow your lineup because I like it so much. Moving forward we have Donaldson coming back and sometime later Bader. Using Boston/Yankee's lineup how about this.

1. Volpe ss
2. DJ 3b, 2b, 1b, dh
3. Judge rf, lf, cf, dh
4. Rizzo 1b, dh
5. Torres 2b, dh
6. Cabrera lf, rf, cf, 2b, 3b, ss, dh
7. Donaldson 3b, dh
8. Higgy/Trevino c
9. Bader cf, lf

Think of the options, using Calhoun, Cordero, IKF as needed. Chuck Hicks butt off the team.

The lineup modifications, depending on pitcher, are endless.

When Stanton comes back? Calhoun gets moved to AAA. When Peraza is ready? IKF gets moved out.

If I can figure this out, why can't the people in charge?

We would not be having these issues if George Steinbrenner was alive. Wake up Hal.

Stan the Man said...

WIN METHOD, maybe it would be too much of a brain drain on the people in charge.

Erica Nuyens said...

WIN METHOD, brilliant as usual. Love ya,

White Knight said...

When you look at the positions several players can play, there is so much than can be done with the lineup in a positive way. However, much of the results depends on players producing when it matters most and buying into wanting to win as a team and not playing for yourself.

Injury update on Bader......

Bader went through an on-field workout April 13 at Yankee Stadium, taking batting practice, running bases, taking fly balls, grounders and throwing to bases. He is expected to have another similar day of workouts during the week of April 16, then will begin a minor league rehab assignment.

“It’s right around the corner, which is very exciting,” Bader said. “It’s been a really good progression.”

Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Bader will serve a relatively longer stint in the minors, saying, “It’s not just going to be a few days down there. He’s got to play some games, get up to playing back-to-back games, volume of innings and things like that.”

Meaningless tidbit --- nonetheless a fact ---The Tampa Bay Rays have started the season 13-2. Best start by any MLB team in 2023. However, there is only one of the thirty MLB teams to have yet to lose a series this season so far. That team is the New York Yankees.

Schmidt's turn for a good game and most important, a win tomorrow?

Looks like Stanton will be out until June. Opportunity knocks again, who will step up?

VincentVanGoYankees said...

The Yankees with Stanton out, may lose his threat to hit home runs, but they lose nothing on defense when he does play the outfield, they lose nothing on the basepaths, they gain less strikeouts, they gain less double play grounders. The Yankees and the dumb stat fraud media loses the meaningless headlines of high velocity hit balls, and how far they were hit. In essence the Yankees lose little. The Yankees, by putting the proper youngster into the lineup and on the field will gain a positive lineup player who can field, has speed, put more balls in play and likely will be a bigger asset to the team.

How and why in the world is Cabrera not in the lineup? Look at the lineup, perfect 1 thru 6. Put Cabrera in the 7 hole in LF and drop IKF and Higgy to 8 and 9 holes, then you extend lineup to a perfect 1 thru 7 and have a better player offensively and defensively added to the lineup. Boone 👿👿
