WIN METHOD ------ HOT STOVE 2018-2019

The 2018 season is over.  Small success as the YANKEES reached the playoffs.  Big failure as the YANKEES lost the ALDS and did not go as far into the playoffs as they did in 2017.   So on to 2019.

The YANKEES had far too many injuries in 2018.  Some of the injuries kept players out not for days, but for weeks and months, and some for the season and into the coming 2019 season.

The YANKEES front office has some work to do this winter and the hot stove should be ready to start getting very warm.  The YANKEE primary need appears to be a front line starting pitcher and a good left handed bat.  Trading away Torres or Andujar would be a major boondoggle and a blunder that the team may not be able to overcome.  The YANKEES will not start the season with Montgomery and Gregorius, both out with major injuries.  The YANKEES have already resigned Bret Gardner for 2019 on a one season contract deal.  I cannot go into who the YANKEES should or should not sign here for proprietary reasons, I will leave that to all you brilliant WIN METHOD posters with all the common sense in the world.   I will say that if things go right there will be one giant acquisition that should help the team enormously.

Don't forget, this team despite the countless injuries, won 100 games in 2018 and where eliminated from the playoffs by a team that won 108 games in 2018, defeated the YANKEES and then defeated the Houston Astros who won 103 games in 2018, and then went on to win the World Series easily trouncing the inferior league champion LA Dodgers.

Keep an eye on the hot stove and lets see what happens.  I don't touch or go near the hot stove, what happens this winter is up to Brian Cashman, Hal Steinbrenner, and the Yankee hierarchy.  Lets hope for the best and LETS GO YANKEES.

This is the best team since Jeter has left with a great chance at becoming World Champions and the stat frauds are sad because the Yankees aren't signing their fake 'generational talent' frauds for exorbitant deals.

Carl Hooks said...

Looks like another week is coming to a close with nothing from Machado and Harper. Only a fool would pay them what they each are asking for.

Should be a fun spring camp with all the new upgraded faces in camp and all the young guys trying to take another step forward.

YankeeMike said...

Guys like LeMahieu, Tulowitzki, Sabathia, Gardner, and a few others are the veteran building blocks the other players should look to and learn TEAM and avoid ME. Produce when it counts and win everything.

Earl Lennon said...

YankeeMike, you could include guys like Happ and Tanaka. The goal has to be the World Series, the goal when he was a Yankee, Jeter played and led by.

coryankee said...

I'd like to straighten out one fake news story proliferated by the stat frauds and echoed by the sycophant talking heads, Miguel Andujar IS NOT as bad a defensive player as it made out to be. Yes, he can improve, any player can always improve. The Yankees won 100 games last season with Andujar at third base, wake up people. Andujar is working this winter on bettering his defense and will improve. REMEMBER, the stat frauds use fake made up defensive metrics as their bible regarding defense abilities of each player. Defensive metrics and stats are totally unreliable and in many cases out and out false. Do not believe what the frauds and others are telling you about Andujars defensive abilities. See for yourself this season.

Gil McKenzie said...

coryankee, hear hear. The defensive metric part is 100% correct. The Andujar working on his defense this winter is 100% right. How much Andujars defense improves this season will be graded as the season progresses. But if just improves by any percent it is still moving forward and better, even if not the best.
The point I am getting to, Andujar at his age and what he is getting paid is so far better than Machado it is off the charts. Lets see which one of these two helps their team to the playoffs and beyond this coming season.

jimbo said...

Open question to any stat frauds willing to prove their point.

If Machado, Harper, and Trout are as you people state, "generational talents" that can "transform a team", home come their teams have not won any WS or even gotten to the WS. Don't count the Dodger WS appearance from last season, the Dodgers where in first place when they obtained Machado.

Please don't blame each players teammates. They are your "generational talents".

Hobbs said...

jimbo, you will not got input from stat frauds...that is how they earned the name frauds. The players you mentioned are NOT generational talents, they are only high individual stat players who play for themselves and their own statistics and then suck teams into paying them hugh contracts. Generational talents are players who help their team to the most playoffs, pennants, and World Championships.

yankeelover said...

Gil McKenzie, word I hear is Boone made a trip down to Dominican Republic to check on Andujar progress. Boone, it appears, returned home very pleased.

The upbeat positiveness of this blog is astounding and refreshing. What a pleasure reading upbeat posts and the only venting is at the frauds who are trying to corrupt the game.

Deb F said...

yankeelover, that is great news.

Cory said...

As with any fake mad up stat it is when an event occurs that makes a difference. I know WIN METHOD fans know the difference, but an infielder can make and error every game and never cost his team a run. Therefore when the frauds tell you a player has a rating of -5, -10, -20, or any number it is not fact, but it is just their fake formula speaking nonsense. You all know I work a lot with numbers, but I only work with reality.

I would love for the Phillies to sign both Machado and Harper and not make the playoffs. It will still be their teammates fault.

Randy Holt said...

Oscar Hron, that would be the coup de grace.

HerecomestheJudge said...

As things now stand for the Yankee infield, some decisions will need to be made and or things ironed out this spring training. 2b, 3b, & ss. 3 positions. LeMahieu, Tulowitzki, Torres, & Andujar. lf, cf, & rf. Gardner, Stanton, Hicks, Judge. 8 players into 6 positions. 1 can always dh and 1 is always out. Frazier in the background starts the season in Scranton.

A. There can always be a deal in the works.

B. Stand pat now and go with the flow.

C. There is an injury and because of the depth of talent we are covered.

A player that plays for himself hurts a team. A player that plays for the team helps the team.

Jimmy Thames said...

All players of a team determine the final results of the team. Thus the answer could go either way. Put another way, a 30 million dollar player can do more damage than help. Now a 30 million dollar player gets paid those dollars because of his individual stats. The issue is individual stats don't determine the best players, winners, and or wins.

Raul Vasquez said...

What offers more value, one 30 million dollar player BA280 HR40 RBI115 or three 10 million dollar players each BA280 HR15 RBI70?

Vladimir Tinzak said...

Considering the 30 million dollar player is only one person and can only play one position at a time I would rather have the three players playing three positions. Better use of 30 million.

Gus Papa said...

Personally, I would never play Machado over Andujar. Andujar not being able to improve defensively at third base is fake news.

Yanks23245 said...

How in the world can anyone consider paying anyone any amount of money if he doesn't even run hard to first base every single time all the time. If I was manage there would be a fine for the first time of 10 thousand dollars, a week without pay for the 2nd time, and half your years pay for the third time. As a matter of fact I would make that part of every players contract.

That’s pretty lame man. Why are you even wasting your time bothering with that if you’re so above it?

Blackbetty said...

I find this forum to be predominantly anti-player, and wanted to share a post from Evan Longoria:

“We are less then a month from the start of spring and once again some of our games biggest starts remain unsigned. Such a shame. It’s seems every day now someone is making up a new analytical tool to devalue players, especially free agents. As fans, why should “value” for your team even be a consideration? It’s not your money, it’s money that players have worked their whole lives to get to that level and be deserving of. Bottom line, fans should want the best players and product on the field for their team. And as players we need to stand strong for what we believe we are worth and continue to fight for the rights we have fought for time and time again.”

As baseball revenues have grown exponentially , players salaries have stayed stable over the past decade. Essentially the owners are filling their pockets and not reinvesting into the game. It seems many here support this initiative, which I think is sad all the more. Happy to shell out increases ticket prices while rooting for players to not be awarded.

And for the record, Aaron Judge was one of the first to like Evan Longoria’s post.

Hobbs said...

Nothing on Gray yet. Yankees and Reds still dithering.

Teena/Bronx said...

Blackbetty, Anti-player? That's a hoot. I can't speak for everyone who posts here, but in my opinion I do not consider the WIN METHOD blog against players. I am against paying players huge sums of money for long terms who do not help their team to great success. If the players don't like what they get paid and the benefits they receive they are free to go into some other profession. Players cheated the owners, the game, and the fans when they went on their steroid binge and got over paid for cheating. The gravy train is breaking down and the owners are realizing they were cheated and it looks like most owners are wisely pulling back. You never know, but things may swing back in favor of the players again for some reason. I don't know about you, but I can leave my employer and try to get more with another employer any time I want. But I won't get a long term deal and a lot more money than I am getting now. I don't produce in my job I can get fired. There is no guarantee.

Mark Wagoner said...

Blackbetty....Owners in baseball as owners in any business provide the jobs. The players as employees in any business do the job. Insurance companies make billions, heck Wells Fargo just announced they had a bad year in 2018 and only cleared 6 billion dollars. The owners pay what they feel is fair or maybe unfair, but they are the ones who provide the opportunities for the players to make millions. I am for WIN METHOD players, players who help their team to the most wins, playoffs and more.

Stache Colinski said...

The Yankee for Grayskies may get a couple of prospects and a decent draft pick. They don't need a roster player so that would be good if that's what they get.

Blackbetty said...

Teena/Mark
You act as though the owners provide for the players but the players do nothing for the owners. Every fan goes to the ballpark specifically for the players. Owners are reaping the rewards of the performance of their players and pocketing it or putting it in other ventures and not reinvesting it in the games.

The comment on the steroid era doesn't seem relevant, today's players have nothing to do with that era.

Steve said...

Harold, I am not above anyone. Just pointing out the poor quality of posters at the stat fraud forums compared to the high end WINMETHOD blog.

jimbo said...

Stache Colinski.... the draft pick may be a 2019 competitive balance pick. But the Yanks are still talking with other teams also.

Mark Wagoner said...

Blackbetty....What you posted is exactly the same for every other business. Just change the word players to employees. Think of all the others who benefit from the ownership of a baseball team. All the other employees, grounds crew, scouts, analysts, broadcast crews, ticket seller and takers, ushers, concessioners, outside businesses such as hotels and restaurants when people come in from out of town. I go to a couple different cities every year to go to Yankee games. Geez, look at what the minimum salary is for a MLB player plus benefits. And they don't even work a full year.

Jack Bauer said...

How about baseball getting back to the good old days of one year contracts for players. It won't happen but it would be fun telling a guy like Machado how can I pay you 30 million dollars for next season since you helped lead my team to last place.

Cal Fuerst said...

Jack Bauer, You give a dirtbag a long term contract and there is no assurance of any kind you get the return you pay for. Very unfair to owners.

yankeelover said...

Not a word regarding Machado. As long as he is not a Yankee all will be fine.

will-i-am said...

This Yankee team is really strong and solid going into spring training. Several minor leaguers will make statements and open eyes in March but there just ain't any room on the big league team right now unless injuries and or trades create room. We will see how things shake out, but it is my belief the Yankees are even stronger and deeper than some fans believe.

Eddie OConnor said...

will-i-am, I believe you are correct in your assessment.

Dave Mathews said...

Gray deal with Cincy still not signed sealed and delivered yet.

Augie Defonce said...

Dave Matthews, maybe the Yankees are still deliberating other offers for Gray. Several teams were interested in him.

Steve said...

Harold, I am making a point differentiating two very opposing beliefs regarding baseball players. One, the stat fraud belief that man made formulated stats define how good players are and two, the WIN METHOD belief that players who produce when it counts to help win games the most for their teams.

Also pointing out that we at WIN METHOD allow spirited debate/discussion and opposing views without banning anyone. Can't say the same for stat fraud forums.

Last and maybe best of all is how 'supposed Yankee fans' go at each other repeatedly. Here there may be a differing view on how the team/management may do something/accomplish something, but it never goes on for page after page for week after week.

The WIN METHOD blog just goes with the flow created and guided by the posters at any time.

Two worlds, the stat fraud fantasy world of made up fake meaningless stats shere players are lauded for losing, and the WIN METHOD world of reality, wins and winning baseball where players are lauded for winning.

bigbadwolf said...

Steve, speaking as someone who has been there and done that, being banned from several forums, as have many other posters here.

NJYANKEE said...

I think I would like to see Andujar batting second and Judge in the three hole.

Robert Mandel said...

NJYANKEE, you may have something there. Andujar has it all to produce in the 2 hole. Hits to all fields, a lot of extra base hits, has power, but he is not the traditional 2 hole hitter. Could he be the leadoff hitter?

Ron Francis said...

Robert Mandel, Andujar is a free swinger, doesn't take pitches and doesn't walk. But the leadoff hitter on officially leads off once.

Evan Donahue said...

No matter what, Andujar will be fun to watch this season. So much to look forward to this season.

Stan the Man said...

Yankeefan2 said...

The Yanks biggest question mark may be Sanche, his attitude, his hustle, his catching, his hitting. A lot of questions he will need to answer.

Rachel said...

Why would you want a free swinger in the 2 hole? Wouldn’t you want people who get on base often in front of him so he’s in a position to drive them in with all the aforementioned extra base hits?

Deb - maybe you can drum up an intelligent response to this question.

jimbo said...

The Yankee lineup is so stacked that there could be men on base anytime any hitter comes up. Then there are times after home runs the next spot comes up with no one on base. As a game evolves you never really know what situation a hitter will bat in. The key is for hitters to produce when it counts to win games.

Rachel said...

I mean at any moment there COULD be men on base, but putting guys who get on base more higher in the lineup means that you have guys getting on base more often batting more.

Benny Pake said...

Rachel, if I understand your statement, that would be a logical reason to have Andujar batting higher in the lineup.

Rachel said...

Benny,
Please alaborate- Andujar does not get on base at a particularly high rate.

Benny Pake said...

Rachel, if men can be on base any time, wouldn't you want a man batting high in the lineup coming up more often to have a chance to drive in the men on. Judge has been batting second. Judge batting third with Andujar batting second would be ideal, good projection for Andujar who is a pure hitter.

NJYANKEE said...

Benny Pake, that is what I stated above. I really like it seeing what others are posting.

Raul Vasquez said...

If your hitters, any hitter produces when it counts, the batting order means little. Your cleanup hitter will lead off the second inning you go down 1,2,3 in the first inning.

muchomachoman said...

Andujar doesn't walk much thus holding down his OBP, but he makes a lot of contact and that is nice in the 2 spot in front of guys like Judge and Stanton.

Rachel said...

The whole theory. Is that you put the men who get on base most often ahead of the guys who drive them in with extra base hits. By batting Andujar second, you’re putting him in front of guys in the bottom of the lineup, who in general do NOT get on base more often. Whereas batting 5th or so, he’s be in front of guys getting on much more often, hence more opportunities to drive runners in (or hitting in big moments when it counts). That’s the thinking.

I would bet you do not see Andujar batting second, much like you didn’t last year, for this reason.

YankeeMike said...

Rachel, Theory is just that. Producing when it counts wins games. Who comes up when it counts no one ever knows, so there is no valid theory. That is why it take everyone on the team contributing when it counts to win games. No theory, just reality.

Vince/Brooklyn said...

Rachel, we will just have to wait and see if Andujar bats in the two hole this season.

Roger Brown said...

Boone does some crazy unorthodox things, so you never know.

AAA said...

The way I see it a bat like Andujars would play well batting second in the lineup. But, what do I know?

George W said...

I don't know, I can see Rachels point. If the Yankees do something stupid and trade Andujar it may make no difference.

coryankee said...

Cincinnati announced it acquired Gray and pitcher Reiver Sanmartin, while infield prospect Shed Long and a 2019 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick are headed to the Yankees. The Reds noted Gray also signed a three-year contract extension with a club option for 2023.

The Yankees then traded Long to the Seattle Mariners in a separate deal in exchange for outfielder Josh Stowers.

To make it simple the Yankees traded Gray and low level pitcher Reiver Sanmartin to the Reds for 2b Shed Long and the Reds Competitive Balance Round A pick, which has great value. Since the Yanks have no use for Long they traded him to the Mariners for a 21 year old center fielder Josh Stowers who only has one year of A ball under his belt. The trading of Gray opens up a spot on the Yankee 40 man roster which also has value as things now stand for the Yankees.

yankeedoodledandy said...

I guess no more Grayskies posts going forward.

Gus Papa said...

The Yankees would only have flipped Shed Long for Josh Stowers instantly because their goal was Stowers all along. The Yanks killed a lot of birds today, got rid of Gray, opened a roster spot, got International dollars, a draft pick, and a youngster that I bet WIN METHOD had something to do with.

Warren Hammond said...

Just another way for the Yankees to skin a cat. Stowers is now ours.

Laura Koehler said...

If he blooms and grows he is still at least a couple of years down the road.

Laura Koehler, the magic word, IF.

johnsondc said...

Joshua Stowers is a very smart and is improving in just a short time in professional ball. Josh has desire and work ethic. Also avoids stupid comments on social media and will fit in wherever he goes. I like him a lot. The guy will make it, due to intangibles which go right past stat frauds and people who do know baseball. Can we just say WIN METHOD.

Vinny Ferrero said...

johnsondc, correction, you left out "not". Next to last sentence, (people who do not know baseball'.

Vinny Ferrero, good catch. I need to be more careful.

Machado is a stat fraud cancer. DO NOT SIGN.

Lou Lis said...

All the talking heads after being called out by Machado's agent have very quiet.

Patricia Piper said...

If Gary Sanchez plays for the team to win and not his own ego the Yankees will easily win the division this season. Wake up Gary, play WIN METHOD baseball and help the team.

Ben Rosen/Israel said...

Patricia Piper, Sanchez has the talent and ability. As you said, he needs to channel it for the right reasons, and the team success is the right reason, not his own.
That is likely why the Yankees don't go for Machado. Machado has probably reached the point of no return. He likely believes he is the team and that is a recipe for disaster.

William Mensom said...

If player stats alone determined which team would win a game, the game would not need to be played. Stat frauds, therefor are inexorably wrong. If one tries to use all the stats the frauds use to rate each player offensively and defensively, I will not use all the acronyms) the frauds would lead you to believe the games are played on spreadsheets. Their fake stats are so brilliantly conceived they cannot be argued with. How dare you challenge the stat frauds and all their convoluted formulas.

Alas, I come to my point and more than likely why the WIN METHOD is so brilliant. WIN METHOD meets players, talks to players and has done this his whole life. Intelligence, character, desire, goals, feelings, interests, and more than just raw ability, make a player what he is.
Stat frauds formulas are unable to account any of this. And these are the things that in the end help define the best players, the WIN METHOD players.

Teena/Bronx said...

William Mensom, your post was magnificent. It should be posted on every baseball forum and website and read by every baseball fan. Thank you for making my day.

Sharon/NC said...

Teena/Bronx, I second that. Thank you William.

Molly Green said...

Has anyone ever said that’s stats win games?

Stanley Chin said...

The problem is the stat frauds no nothing about intelligence, character, desire, goals, feelings, and interests.

Sal Mineo said...

Teams win games with the contribution of all players on the team.

Victor Grandozi said...

William Mensom, you nailed it.

RLA said...

Molly Green, Isn't what you posted WAR supposed to lead you to believe?

Tom Loughlin said...

Sal Mineo, contributions when it counts is the most important factor in winning games.

Mariano Rivera was voted into Baseballs Hall of Fame today and was the first player to be voted in unanimously. Mo was something special and produced when it mattered most than any other reliever in the history of baseball. Helped his team to countless playoffs, pennants, and World Championships.

Barry West said...

CONGRATULATIONS MARIANO.

Deb F said...

What is extra special about Riveras election to the Hall was being on every ballot, something that no other player did.

Gus Papa said...

Mariano Rivera was the best closer in the history of baseball. One of kind. The batters knew what pitch was coming and still had trouble hitting it.

Doug Shoen said...

I wonder if anyone ever kept count of how many bats Mo broke over his career.

Ernie Hassel said...

Doug Shoen >>> A couple of thousand?

William Mensom, your post was wonderful. I agree completely.

Mo was special, no doubt about it.

I’m a little confused by your question, but no I don’t believe WAR = stats wins games.

Rivera was a class act and has truly given back to his community in Panama.

Three weeks until Yankee camp opens for pitchers and catchers.

yankeeclipper said...

Sanchez hopefully will come to camp in shape and a better attitude built on the team winning and his not trying to hit a the baseball as far as he can every time up.

RLA said...

Molly, was or was not WAR created to tell fans how many wins over the replacement of the average player the higher WAR player would be? If it was, then a higher WAR player equals more wins and conversely lower WAR means less wins. Isn't that exactly what WAR stand for?

Yanks23245 said...

RLA, The way it was explained to me is that that higher WAR players mean more wins for a team, in theory making the team better. But WAR is man made and man altered.

jimbo said...

I found this printed at Sportingnews about WAR.

"""""In 100 games for the Mets, Loney was worth -0.1 rWAR and -0.2 fWAR, which makes him an example of a “replacement level player." When discussing WAR, we are discussing the value that a player provides over a player such as Loney: a minor league player who usually only ever sees play as a replacement for a better player.

What about the "win" part? If you take 25 players like Loney and put them all on a major league team together, one would expect that team to win about 48 games. But if we take one of those players off the team and replaced them with Mike Trout, that team would win about eight to 10 more games: Trout is usually worth about eight to 10 wins more than a replacement player like James Loney, or 8-10 WAR."""""

Looks to me like WAR is being used to determine how many more wins a player can mean to a team.

Domenic said...

All sabermetrics with there convoluted formulas try to do is try to define who the best players are who absolutely no input on what each player does to help his team actually win.

Alex Antonius said...

I wonder if the teams in on Machado will raise their offers or lower them as the season draws closer. My view is I make an offer take it or leave it. You can get more somewhere else, take their offer.

Molly said...

RLA/Jimbo
It's an attempt to summarize a players contributions to a team in one statistic. I don't think anyone just adds up WAR and concludes that's how many games a team wins. Everyone knows there are many factors that a team has the contributes to wins: Team ability, performance in clutch situations, luck.

This is just an attempt to quantify ability.

RLA said...

Molly, I have read a few comments on the subject. The gist being if you add the WAR of all players on a team it should come close to the wins the team attains. That is the stat fraud theory, not mine, and not any sane baseball fan. In theory if you trade a 2 WAR player and prospects for a 6 WAR player to replace the player you traded, the team should improve by 4 wins. That is all baloney. Molly, you mentioned performance in clutch situations, aka performing when it counts. That is what determines wins. Team ability is determined by having the players who perform when it counts the most often to win enough games to make the playoffs. You also used the words "everyone knows", unfortunately everyone doesn't know.

The article jimbo posted says exactly what I have read in several places regarding how many wins a team achieves and if you replace a player with higher WAR the team wins more. That is as false as WAR itself.

William Mensom said...

Throw in the final element that teams are getting in on but the Yankees have used for close to three decades now. Player profiling, known here as the WIN METHOD. If a team can eliminate most of the problems that players bring as baggage they will be better off. The proverb "one bad apple spoils the barrel" describes what player profiling can do. WIN METHOD is the father of player profiling.

sid greenberg,nyc said...

William.....and WIN METHOD along with George Steinbrenner is a reason the Yankees have had the best record in baseball along with the most playoff appearances, pennants, and World Series rings than any other team in baseball.

William Mensom and sid greenberg, nyc, and that is why this blog is the number one baseball blog in the world. It is the only one with WIN METHOD.
