WIN METHOD --- END OF 2017 --- BUILD FOR 2018 --- BLOOM AND GROW

The YANKEES have reached the end of their fantastic 2017 season.  And a great season it was, accomplishing more than any pundits and most fans expected.  But not here at the WIN METHOD, where it was stated the YANKEES would make the playoffs and beyond, and where likely every WIN METHOD fan believed would happen.  The YANKEES not only reached the playoffs, but they won the wild card game against the Minnesota Twins to advance to the American League Division Series (ALDS).  In the ALDS the YANKEES had the Cleveland Indians waiting for them to play a best of five game series.  The Indians won 102 games during the season and were looking to go back to the World Series where they lost in seven games last season. The Indians won the first two games and the YANKEES had their backs to the wall.  You WIN METHOD fans, the smartest most intelligent baseball fans never gave up, you rooted your team on, never gave up, and the YANKEES themselves never game up as they went on to defeat the Indians in the next three games.  An amazing comeback for the YANKEES.  By winning the ALDS the YANKEES moved on to the American League Championship Series (ALCS) where they had the Houston Astros waiting for them.  Houston won 101 games over the season and are a young developing great team.  The ALCS is a best of seven game series and the winner goes to the World Series and the losing team ends their season.  The Astros won the first two games of the series and the YANKEES again had their backs to the wall.  The YANKEES never gave up and neither did you WIN METHOD fans.  The YANKEES came back to win the next three games of the series.  The YANKEES just needed to win one of the next two games in Houston to go to the World Series.  The Astros had other thoughts in mend and they also never gave up and the Astros came back to win the two games in Houston and move on to the World Series.  The YANKEE season was over.  But the blooming and growing was just beginning.  The 2017 YANKEES achieved more than the baseball world expected.  The WIN METHOD fans were not surprised, WIN METHOD fans being the most intelligent and knowledgeable in baseball were well aware of what their YANKEE team could achieve as the youngsters started to bloom and grow.
Congratulations to the YANKEE players, coaches, management, front office, and ownership for allowing the YANKEE team to bloom and grow.

The off season has arrived for the YANKEES.  Time to kick back, rest, relax, and do the things you want to do and the things that you don't have time to do during the season.  Enjoy guys, you made you proud and your run is just beginning.  During the off season the YANKEE front office will have many decisions to make regarding player personnel.  No question the roster for 2018 will change, some new players will come and some will go.  The YANKEES are in a position of great power having the best minor league system in baseball and many many players blooming and growing trying to make the 2018 roster and challenge veteran players.  The front office has work to do, hard decisions to make, and make them they will.

On a side note, you the WIN METHOD fans, fans from all over the world have made it possible for the WIN METHOD  blog, the greatest Yankee and baseball blog/forum in the world to surpass a quarter of a billion views.  Thank you fans for your devotion and passion, for being smartest baseball fans that exist, and for standing up against stat frauds  and their misguided fools view of baseball.  This blog will continue without advertisements and clutter that fills every other site you may visit.  I know, you visit them for laughs.

Have fun everyone in the off season.  I will go out and find a few more WIN METHOD players to bloom and grow down the road.  Spring training 2018 is going to be a lot of fun as the kids make their push for the majors, the brightest lights and the biggest stage in baseball, the New York YANKEES.  Yes they can, and they will.  Lets go Yankees.

WHIP is maybe one of the better stats to use for pitchers, it is a simple straight forward calculation, but it also is not perfect.

yankeeclipper said...

Then you can use wins and the WIN METHOD. Wins and the WIN METHOD can be used for a game, a series, a week, a month, or the season. They always define who was best for any time period. They are NEVER wrong. Common sense and logic over false formulas and false values.

Nothing new right now as to any Yankee deals. Just a few days until Christmas. Spring camp opening is growing closer as is the new year.
So MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR to all.

coryankee said...

In reality the Yankees don't need to pull the trigger on any deal. As far as second and third base are concerned, if they don't want to start the season with Andujar and Torres they can start with Torreyes and Wade. Then advance Andujar and Torres when the time is right.

jimbo said...

Baseball contracts and trades need to be finished this week before the central office closes next week. MLB offices shut down the week between Christmas and New Years, so no deals can be made official until commissioners office reopens.

Warren Hammond said...

coryankee....That is a good way to go in my opinion. The Yanks can still push the market for a starter if they wish, but I wouldn't give away a top prospect who fits our needs. A prospect with no spot or a lower level one I would be fine with.

I wouldn't mind if the Yankees sign Todd Frazier, even a two year deal. He can play/platoon/backup at first, second, and third base. Pinch hit also. I would no way go for Machado or Longoria or any high price longer term cast off.

Longoria is off the table. Traded to the Giants. Great pass by the Yankees.

coryankee said...

An illustration and a little game for baseball fans. You pick one choice of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.

You have five starting pitchers for a season of 162 baseball games. Do you want from each,

1. 200 innings pitched
2. 200 strike outs
3. 10 home runs allowed
4. 18 wins
5. 2.50 ERA

okiened said...

coryankee, great job aggravating the stat frauds for Christmas. My choice is 4.

Ziggy Mann said...

4 for me also.

Boston/Yankee said...

I'm an outcast up here in Boston. Nonetheless, Merry Christmas to all Yankee fans and baseball fans no matter who or where you are.
Number 4. You have to win to be the best.

Steven said...

Number 4

Better question for you cor - using those stats as prior year stats, which of those would be the most important for evaluating that pitcher and if you would want to sign them for next year?

Cory said...

coryankee......It would be dependent on what you are looking for. If you are trying to make the playoffs, there are no ifs, ands, or buts, it is number 4. If you are playing in a fantasy league it could be something else.

Jackson DeWitt-Camp Market, South Korea said...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Barry West said...

Steven, I would look first to signing pitchers who win the most often. All the other attributes are likely pluses, but you can't make the playoffs without wins.

Felix Lopez said...

Feliz Navidad -- Merry Christmas

Steven said...

Barry
The point I was driving at- winning isn't a pitcher skill. Getting hitters out is consistently is the skill and is most repeatable and reliable measure for future success. If you look at pitchers, wins fluctuate greatly year-to-year and are unreliable measure from one year to the next and thus a poor way to project FUTURE performance.

Case in point who would you rather have next season - Jason Vargas or Luis Severino - (FYI Vargas won 18 games last year on a much worse team than the yankees).

Deb F said...

Christmas Eve. Santa is getting ready. Merry Christmas everyone.

Barry West said...

Steven, I understand what you are trying to get at, but the question is an unlikely scenario. That is the problem with a question and not a discussion. The fact that is irrefutable is that only wins will get a team into the playoffs and you need to have your pitchers win games no matter how they do it.
To answer your question, I would take Louie Louie, but not for the reason you may be trying to point out. I would take Louie Louie because 1. he had a .700 W/L percent and Vargas had a .621 W/L percent. 2. Louie Louie is ten years younger. Caveat, if KC had five starters last year that did what Vargas did then KC goes to the playoffs.
Also, players in every category have major variations in their individual stats every season with strong variations in HR totals, BA, RBIs, etc.

NJYANKEE said...

Here is my two cents. Using coryankees five points. If had five starters and each had just one of the five points, my team may or may not make the playoffs, there is really no way of knowing because only wins can get a team into the playoffs and my other four starters each with a great peripheral, is meaningless compared to wins.

Steven said...

Barry
coryankee presented the initial question, so I was limited in my response. Agreed though, a discussion is more effective.

Severino (Why are we calling him Louie Louie?!) is the obvious answer for the reasons you specified and others. There are a number of pitchers who won less games than Vargas in 2017 that I would desire more than him in 2018. My main point is that evaluating a pitcher by only wins for the future, and not looking at the full picture, is just as useless and looking at one stat and not looking at all the information.

I mean case-in-point, the Yankees must have been evaluating Sonny Gray by more than wins. They must all be looking at more than wins with Cole.

Barry West said...

Steven, Questions can be posed to get a desired result. In my opinion I do not think coryankee was looking for a "desired" result but was seeking a common sense result. Pose his question not based on the past but what you would want from your starting five for next season. The answer should be the same, I want the winners. Because the other answers don't translate to winning. They each can be an attribute to a pitcher, but nothing in more important than winning.

Evan Donahue said...

Barry, Steven, >>> It has been mentioned several times in the ten years of this blog, but there are about 80 pitchers in the HOF and almost all are starters, and many with at least 300 wins. The relievers in the HOF got there with the amount of saves they earned. There is also as much as a 2 run per game ERA from the top to the bottom.

Barry West said...

Steven, I think the Yankees are looking for nothing but wins from Cole and Gray. Both are barely #5 starters, maybe a 4. Remember this, a player can be WIN METHOD for a team and not for another. Some guys may be WIN METHOD wherever they go and some can never be WIN METHOD.

Jen Vitter said...

If given the chance, Chance Adams may be a better pitcher than Gerrit Cole. I rather give Adams the chance to prove himself and not have to lose any of our youngsters.

The Yankees don't need Clint Frazier, how about to send him to AAA and either fail, be average, or excel to find out what they may have instead of trading him for a sub .500 pitcher the last two seasons with very little upside unless he is truly WIN METHOD.

Montgomery is better than Cole and it is very likely Adams may be better. Let Cole rot in Pittsburgh or let some other team overpay and have him.

How do evaluate a player defensively? Simply by errors?

Hugh Johanson said...

Go Yankees i 2018.

coryankee said...

Steven, I strongly suggest you try to find a replay of this mornings program and hear what the analytical stat export had to say. I do not wish to put words into his mouth.
As far as I am concerned I like to watch guys make plays that are routine and how smoothly they do it. The same for the more difficult plays of each type. Left, right, coming in, depth on outfield popups, arm strength, and the plays others only dream of making. Errors can help, particularly throwing errors, but errors are not the end all answer.

Steven said...

I see. So are you of the opinion that there will never be away to quantify defensive effectiveness similar to how offensive success has been quantified?

Success in baseball is determined by wins and winning. Individual ability can be determined by how many HRs a player hits, how many hits a player achieves, how many stolen bases, etc etc. True success is measured by how many times a player helps his team to the playoffs and more. Now, stat frauds, don't come back and try to tell me that I think a utility infielder who helps his team(s) to 8 playoffs is better than a starting second baseman who has helped his team to 4 playoffs.

Steven, not really. This blog was created so that posters could freely post their views no matter what they believe regarding baseball. An enormous amount of posters here have been banned from forums for decades because they did not fit the mold of the stat frauds lies and deceptions using man made stats. More people are finally realizing that these modern analytical stats are pure and utter garbage. The posters here were banned for using common sense and logic and not using or believing in fake numbers. The posters here were banned for believing in wins and winning determined the best players, not individual stats. More and more fans were introduced to this blog and it has grown exponentially. It is read all over the world and posters from all over the world express their opinions freely. You can see for yourself how few stat frauds post here. They meet their match here. They are shown how wrong and how stupid they are by countless other posters. The stat frauds can't silence opinions here by banning posters. The posters here have freedom, which is not true at the talk forums. You would think that intelligent posters would welcome a diversity of opinions and views, here we do, no bans of posters, just no foul language. We accept name calling, it allows posters to express and release their frustrations without very inappropriate language. More and more baseball fans are seeing the light and the WIN METHOD keeps growing.

If the Yankees have faith in Torres and Andujar, even if it is a month or three into the season, why waste dollars or a trade for some infielder who likely wouldn't be better than the combination of Wade and Torreyes who would cost less.

Eddie OConnor said...

That is why I am hoping Cashman doesn't trade for anyone unless it is a steal. We need nothing that we don't have in hand and who are blooming and growing.

Hal Jenks said...

Todd Frazier would be ideal if he would take one year and ten million. But he and his family come first. He can likely get two or three years and a couple million more somewhere else.

Linda Rice said...

Hard to believe it is only six weeks to spring training.

Carl Hooks said...

The best part of this coming season, is what this Yankee crew is capable of achieving.

Augie Defonce said...

The goal for 18 is the World Series.

Jack Gordon said...

The holidays are over, we are into 2018. Baseball action should start to get into second gear. There is no other sports competition now.

Yankeeforever said...

One of the biggest projects this spring will be to see if Betances gets his head straight. Many people, albeit they would be wrong, say Betances mechanics are out of wack. Sorry people, it is his brain, mind set, and priorities that are screwed up.

Guy Padikian said...

Yankeeforever, I agree. The Yankees have a top notch pitching coach so if there was a mechanics issue it would have been fixed. Being in Betances head only Betances and a shrink can fix that. It all stems back to Betances trying to rip off the Yankees in his arbitration case, which he lost and then getting married.

Greg/Morristown,NJ said...

Mechanics can be fixed pretty quickly. The mind is a whole different story and much more complicated to fix. It can be done, and Betances if corrected would be a major asset for the Yankees.

muchomachoman said...

Betances may have fallen prey to some bad advice from his agent? His agent may have convinced him to try to hold the Yankees up for the outlandish salary he requested in arb. Or maybe his wife? I have no knowledge of any of this, just trying to figure out why he is so screwed up.

White Knight said...

Greg?Morristown,NJ....It would be fantastic if Betances can consistently dominate in relief again. Consistently being the operative word. He could make the Yankees really tough to beat.

Patrick Healy said...

I believe if it was mechanics it would be fixed. Sadly I think he may be a 'mental case' for whatever reason. That makes him a liability when it counts. I can only hope he can be repaired.

Benny Pake said...

Betances may be the biggest question mark for the Yankees this spring. We will see how it all turns out. Hoping for the best no matter what his problem is. If he gets fixed it is good for the team and a lot of fun for the fans.

Hugh Johanson said...

I believe Betances control is more mental than anything. Just missing the plate can mean a pitcher is a little off or getting squeezed by the ump, but missing the plate by a foot or two and even more in every different direction is more than just control.

coryankee said...

I did a little research and have to believe that Betances' problem is in his head.

Nick Polito said...

I tend to agree with the consensus here. Mechanics are fixable. The head is not. Remember Rick Ankiel.

Gary Shrieber said...

It was posted on this blog years ago that several posters felt there was something wrong with Betances. All said they thought it was mental. They were right.

RLA said...

I think some people are afraid to use the word 'mental'.
Baseball is a very mental game and the best players produce the most under the most telling conditions.

John Hartnett said...

It takes great talent to play baseball at the major league level. Some players have used drugs to raise their game and corrupted the game while baseball leaders looked the other way.

Stan the Man said...

The cheaters of baseball who used drugs are still trying to get into the Hall of Fame. Sadly the powers that be in baseball are afraid to just ban them forever. Far too many leaders are gutless swine.

Deb F said...

Well, Betances will get another chance this spring to straighten out his mind. Maybe, a last chance.

Karl R said...

I hope the Yankees do not sign or trade for a third baseman but use Torreyes or/and Wade until Andujar is ready.

Vladimir Tinzak said...

Letting Andujar and Torres play as soon as possible would surely keep the team under the salary cap for 2018 and let the team bloom and grow.

yankeeclipper said...

Everything will be decided during spring training.

Sal Mineo said...

yankeeclipper, or more good problems can be created if players excel.

Victor Grandozi said...

Problems of players fighting for a spot on the roster are good and the more problems the better the team should be.

Gil McKenzie said...

We are blooming and growing.

coryankee said...

Talking about the winter hot stove wheeling and dealing period. The highlight, the brightspot has been hit and done with. The Yankees signing of Giancarlo Stanton will likely dwarf anything else that happens this winter. The hot stove has hit its hottest point already.

Fred Slube said...

coryankee, the other players will start to fall. But you are right, nobody is going to beat the Yankees getting Stanton.

David Stern said...

Hot stove signing. LOL. Right-hander Dillon Gee has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chunichi Dragons.

jimbo said...

Torreyes playing a month as starter for the Yankees doesn't hurt the team to any measurable degree unless you are a stat fraud and use a made up (fake) formula.

Hobbs said...

Maybe the chill on the hot stove could be teams seeing how the Indians, Cubs, Astros, Yankees are building with youngsters. They may be realizing that the FA's just aren't worth what they are seeking in both terms of years and money.

Cory said...

How about Harper, Machado, and Trout over their career so far. Three of the highest rated stat fraud WAR players.
Combined they have played in a total of 8 post season series. They have 1 win and 7 losses in those series. They have been relatively moderate over their careers in helping their team get to the post season, and almost useless in the post season.
Combined they have 111 at bats with just 21 hits for a .189 batting average. Most important is their teams are a combine 1 win and 7 losses in those post season series.

yankeelover said...

Cory, come on now, you know the stat frauds have their ducks in a row to cover their BS. Small sample size, it's their teammates fault, they had a bad October, etc.

Domenic said...

There is an awful lot of losing going around when it counts most between the those three.
Judge and Sanchez have won more post season series this year than those three combined over their careers.

yankeelover said...

Judge and Sanchez are also a small sample size.

Tommy Lee said...

It never changes, you got to win to be the best. You are not the best because some stat fraud says you are.

Nathan Riley said...

I wouldn't want any of the three on my team. I would go broke and the team would not be successful.

Steven said...

It’s just strange to make that argument on Harper, Trout, Machado while welcoming Stanton - who also had a very poor history of winning. It’s just a silly argument to make when as you say - a player can be winmethod for one team and not another.

They could all be win method for this team, how would you know they wouldn’t be?

sid greenberg,nyc said...

Steven, WIN METHOD knows. That is what he does.

Steven said...

Yes I can see he’s interviewed all 750 major league players on active rosters in addition to the multitude of prospects of minor
Leaguers and prospective prospects.

NJYANKEE said...

Steven, you are exactly right. A player can be WIN METHOD for one team, several teams, no teams. Go back and read when WIN METHOD said afraud was a cancer for the Yankees, and baseball in general. I think it is very safe to say if WIN METHOD knows which if any of the three would be a good fit for the Yankees. We will see.
