WIN METHOD....bringing out the best

Here it is the last month of the 2013 MLB regular season and the drive to the playoffs is on.   And yes, this YANKEE team is in the hunt and could still reach the playoffs this season.  WIN METHOD fans, and all baseball fans, think of the playing time lost by so many YANKEES this season.  I bet we couldn't name everyone, but lets try.   We lost regulars, then we lost replacements for the regulars, then we lost subs for the replacement players.

Jeter, Teixeira, Granderson, Cervelli, Youkilis, Hafner, Phelps, Nix, Almonte, Nunez, and you can throw in sad to say Afraud.  Add in the smaller injuries to several others for various amounts of time and you have more games missed than you can shake a stick at.

Through all the injuries the WIN METHOD has selected enough quality players producing just enough and at the right time to help keep this years YANKEE team in the playoff dog fight.  The YANKEE season isn't over yet.

It is as it always has been a matter of WINS.  Only WINS can take a team and a player to the second season.  Nothing else matters, no stat of any kind, be it an actual reality based stat or a convoluted misleading man made stat used and relied upon only by the most foolish of baseball fans.
A question that that the stat frauds can't handle and refuse to answer is....would you rather go to the playoffs because you won enough games, or would you rather lead the league in stats and not make the playoffs???

The interesting story of this season and what we need to take away from this season, is just how well the WIN METHOD can produce, even in the worst of times, and then just how great a season 2014 will look to be.  First things first, lets all root for this YANKEE team to reach the playoffs this season.  No matter what happens the rest of the year, this 2013 YANKEE team has done the WIN METHOD and Joe Girardi proud.  Lets roll.

Pat McGonagle said...

The Yankees' farm system has not been productive in recent years. Can WIN METHOD please shed some light here?

Pat McGonagle said...

The 2013 season was pretty interesting from a "Win Method" perspective. The Yankees scored fewer runs than they allowed. You'd have expected them to be below .500. But they were eight wins over .500. That was lagrely because they had baseball's best record in one-run games (30-16). They may fall back to earth in this area without Rivera. The team could easily remain middle of the pack.

bigbadwolf said...

Welcome Pat. The WIN METHOD is all about winning. Nothing else matters. Teams win and reach the playoffs in many different ways. To sum it up, wins and winning is the desired goal of each team or should be. Unfortunately that may not be the goal of individual players.

The Yankees have stayed in contention for two decades now since the inception of the WIN METHOD. It has put countless players on the field over the years and countless more were used in deals for seasoned players. This past seasons team was carried by many young Yankee players who were just good enough to keep the team in playoff contention right ot the end of the season.

southernbelleshell said...

Not all players who have drafted become big name stars, but many do contribute to the making of winning teams. Winning is the goal of the WIN METHOD, not super name players, but players who win. This is what made the Yankees contenders this season even with all the injuries.

Victor Gandozi said...

Picking up where others left off. I could name many names of our minor league system who have helped the Yankee teams win over the past two decades. Some had higher individual stats than others, but that is not important, the wins are what are important and that is what was achieved by the players the Yankees have developed.

William Mensom said...

Hey there Pat M... Post any questions or concerns.

What you want to keep in mind regarding the WIN METHOD is that nothing supersedes wins. Example, two teams play a three game series and one team wins 1-0 and 1-0 and loses 15-1. Stats the winning team scored one run per game and gave up five. The losing team two games to one had better stats in all categories, hitting and pitching. One problem they lost the series. the WIN METHOD espouses winning baseball as a team, not individual statistics.

RLA said...

Bosux-Tigers 2 games each. StLouis up 3 games to 2 over LA.

YankeeMike said...

Any minor leaguer can blossom at any time. Some take several years, some less. The only important thing is helping the team win and the Yankee farm has helped the team win more games over the past two decades, reach more playoffs and win more World Series than the farm of any other team in baseball.

Sharon/NC said...

There is only one stat in baseball that determines the best players and the best teams. WINS, only fools and or people who do not know baseball would think something else.

will-i-am said...

I for one would not mind seeing Cano leave the Yankees. He hung around afraud to much and became contaminated similar to Melky Cabrera.

Pat McGonagle said...

Thanks, William M. -- a little food for thought. Your point holds true over short series, for sure, but not so much over the long haul that is a full season. Just five teams in major-league history have made the playoffs scoring fewer runs than they allowed: the 1984 Royals, 1987 Twins, 1997 Giants, 2005 Padres, and 2007 Diamondbacks. Only one of those teams won the Series, the '87 Twins. With the wild card, we may see more such teams make it into the playoffs, where it's more likely you can be outscored in a short series yet still come out on top. But it's still not that likely that they'd even get a wild card.

Linda Rice said...

i think what will be most interesting next season is the starting rotation.

William Mensom said...

You are right Pat. And logically scoring more runs and allowing less should mean more wins. But a team can do the above and still not make the playoffs and lose out to a team that scores less runs and allows more. The point being and what WIN METHOD has shown us, is that the win is the desired outcome and the most wins gets a team to the playoffs. In essence nothing else is as important.

Ben Rosen/Israel said...

Pat, William, how do you guys feel about defensive stats?

William Mensom said...

Hi Ben, i have absolutely no use for the convoluted man made defensive stats. Anytime I talk baseball with a fan who uses them in his argument regarding the defensive prowess of players, I state my opinion and then tell the guy he has no idea what he is talking about and knows nothing about baseball. The end.

johnsondc said...

Throwing in my two cents, the zone fielding stats are completely flawed, totally inaccurate, and in finality, useless.

Patricia Piper said...

Defensive metrics are so subjective and have more flaws then you can count. The are worthless and only used by the most ignorant of fans.

Quay Ho said...

sux with a 4-3 win take 3 game to 2 lead over Tigers and home to Boston.

I agree, defensive stats are useless and meaningless.

Vladmir Tinzik said...

Nest game for Dodgers and Tigers is a must win. Only by winning can each team play another game. WINS and only WINS determine the best.

Yanks23245 said...

Elimination games. Do or die. Win or go home.

Cory said...

Winning is the only thing that matters and winning is the only thing that ever will define the best.

When you read some of the talk forums that knock the Yankees after all they have accomplished over the past two decades, one would think the Yankees never made the playoffs, won no pennants and won no World Series. But again, the facts get in the way ant the WIN METHOD truth wins out. The Yankee organization has been the most successful in MLB over the past 20 years.

World Series game one tonight in Boston.

Pat McGonagle said...

I don't dismiss stats out of hand. I wouldn't rely on them entirely either. It's not something on which you have to take a black-and-white position. For example, I just looked at a SABR article that explores dfensive metrics in depth. It included this reasonable, balanced line: "Just as a front office’s attentiveness to the statistical analysis of defense doesn’t guarantee success (the Mariners, for example, have gotten off to a woeful start this year), neither does willful neglect of it necessarily mean a team is doomed to flail around near the bottom of the standings."

Donna2 said...

sux jump out to 3-0 lead after one.

Stan the Man said...

There are some stats that are factual and then there are others that are convoluted man made stats which are pretty much totally useless. There is no man made defensive stat that has any real life value or accuracy. When players produce is far more important and game defining than how much they produce. When players produce are conducive to winning games and wins determine who gets to the playoffs.

YankeeMike said...

Here is how I look at stats. A guy has a batting average of .320 and another has an average of .260. All well and good, but which one is the more productive hitter for his team?

bigbadwolf said...

I have an example for you Pat. A small sample, but very apropos, because it is a relief pitcher scenario, and a relief pitcher may throw only 60 to 80 innings over a season.

Three game series. Your 8th inning reliever hasn't pitched in a week and in game one with his team losing 6-0 the manage wants to give him some work. He pitches one inning and allows four runs. His team loses 10-0. In games two and three he pitches the 8th inning of each and pitches a perfect 3 up 3 down inning in each. His team wins both games 3-1 and 2-0. His ERA for the 3 games is 12.00, but he gets 2 holds and his team wins 2 games of the 3. How important is his ERA. In my view, it is meaningless. Also those 4 runs over @ 60-80 innings does impact his ERA to a significant degree. That is what the WIN METHOD is about. The wins are what counts and what defines the best not the individual stats.

RLA said...

Boston up 7-0 after 7 1/2. Give the sox game one.

Deb F said...

Nice game by the sux last night to start the series with a convincing win.

Ray from Boston said...

The test of any stat is taking it to the extreme and looking at the outcome you get. When you take wins and the WIN METHOD to the extreme what you get is a 162-0 season. There is and never was anything more telling and accurate than the WIN METHOD. I have yet seen or heard from anyone to prove wins do not determine the best.

Yanks23245 said...

If the Cardinals don't win tonight their backs will surely be against the wall.

Remember Yankee fans, when the talking heads throw out the name of a player in association to the Yankees, that may not be true in any way. Since it appears the Yankees must pay a premium to players they sign just because they are the Yankees, the Yankees try to show interest in almost every logical player available to drive up the price the other team may have to pay.
