No wait, forget that, it's meaningless.

Any kind of balanced discussion of Jeter here is pointless. As you would have it, he is flawless in all facets of the game. Here are some very meaningless individual stats comparing several players over their career. Jeter hits into 16 DPs per 162 games. Try these on for size Hank Aaron 16/162. Albert Pujols 21/162. Joe Mauer 18/162. Arod 15/162. Chipper Jones 16/162. I guess there is another individual stat that doesn't mean squat. Doesn't mean squat = stat fraud opinions. WIN METHOD was just being humble re Jeters popup rate. Jeters popup rate per 100 atbats is the lowest in the HISTORY of BASEBALL. Getting back to your ground ball hitter claim. Go look up any individual meaningless stat you wish. Whatever you find does not change the fact that Jeter has helped lead his team to more playoffs, pennants, and WS than any present day player. That defines, BEST.bigbadwolfnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7276958081959705941.post-90831093756420978622010-02-25T17:03:14.579-05:002010-02-25T17:03:14.579-05:00I thought WIN METHOD's post said lowest in MLB...I thought WIN METHOD's post said lowest in MLB, rather than "in the history of baseball." To add, Jeter is not a pronounced ground ball hitter, and his GIDP rate is in line with baseballs norm. In my opinion and many who really know baseball, Jeter is the best shortstop defensively, a shortstop that has cemented the up the middle strength of his team and has carried the team to countless playoffs, pennants, and WS rings. Jeter is my first selection in creating a team from players over his era. that makes him the best in the game.bigbadwolfnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7276958081959705941.post-72991609989606458572010-02-24T17:09:49.014-05:002010-02-24T17:09:49.014-05:00That pop-up stat about Jeter is interesting, espec...That pop-up stat about Jeter is interesting, especially since bat control is one of baseball's lost arts. It kind of reminds me of Joe Sewell, the Hall of Fame shortstop who struck out less than anybody else ever. I'd hardly call popping up seldom one of the measures of Jeter's greatness, though. Let's not forget that as a pronounced groundball hitter, Jeter also hits into quite a few double plays (though he's certainly no Jim Rice there).

Calling Jeter's defense second to none is an overstatement. He's not as bad as so many people like to say, but he's not as good as four Gold Gloves would suggest either. He reminds me of Cal Ripken: a fine all-around shortstop who has used positioning (though Cal started much earlier than Jeter) to help offset his limitations. The balls they get (got) to, they field(ed) surehandedly. They also use(d) their knowledge of the game to good benefit.

Barry Larkin and Omar Vizquel were better fielders when Jeter first came up. There are better fielders now. Judging the total package (including rings), I have no problem agreeing that Jeter is the best of his era. But to say he's the greatest in all phases of the game makes the argument less convincing.Ralph Wenznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7276958081959705941.post-24451210063407416012009-11-09T08:42:26.315-05:002009-11-09T08:42:26.315-05:00Thanks for the great season, and thanks for taking...Thanks for the great season, and thanks for taking us to the top of the baseball world.Pat Pipernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7276958081959705941.post-69232537827774183212009-11-08T15:44:44.230-05:002009-11-08T15:44:44.230-05:00I agree Victor.
