WIN METHOD PLAYOFF CHOICES 2010

Here are my choices and why for the first round playoff roster for the World Champion NEW YORK YANKEES. We are looking for the best twenty-five players who could be of the most value to help the team WIN through the first round of the American League playoffs.
Starting with the pitching staff, probably the most important position on any team. I go with eleven pitchers...1. CC Sabathia, 2. Andy Pettitte, 3. Phil Hughes, 4. AJ Burnett, as the possible starters. 5. Mariano Rivera, as the closer. 6. Boone Logan, 7. Royce Ring as the lefty relievers. I choose Ring to give Girardi somewhat more flexibility in the spot lefty reliever spot. 8. Joba Chamberlain, 9. Kerry Wood, 10. David Robertson, as the right handed relievers and 11. Ivan Nova as the possible long reliever if needed and or spot reliever.
For catcher, I would carry just two, 12. Jorge Posada, and 13. Francisco Cervelli.
At first base, it would be 14. Mark Teixeira, and 15. Lance Berkman.
At second, third, and short my selections are 16. Derek Jeter (the best baseball player in MLB over the past decade and a half), 17. Robinson Cano, 18. Alex Rodriquez, 19. Ramiro Pena, and 20. Eduardo Nunez, the last two for base stealing speed and late defensive prowess at third base.
Finally for the outfield, 21. Brett Gardner, 22. Nick Swisher, 23. Curtis Granderson, 24. Marcus Thames, and 25. Greg Golson. Golson for late inning defense and the ability to steal in a crucial situation.
In my view, this group of twenty-five offers the best pitching, hitting, defense, speed, and flexibility in order to cover any aspect of any game depending on any situation.

bigbadwolf said...

No magic today. We come home with home field advantage.

Norm P said...

Hughes had nothing. Ugh

Gus Papa said...

We are home now. Recover, recoup, and revenge. Andy can beat Lee. Take Lee to right field and pound him.

Will Butler said...

Still seven more to go. We can do it and we will do it. Go Yankees.

Redsoxfan6 said...

Since I was the only one to pick Texas, I guess i won the game two predictions.

Sharon/NC said...

Nice job redsoxfan. You were the only poster to pick Texas. But your team didn't make the playoffs and you have to live with that.

Go Yankees, the World Champions.

Jerry Curcio said...

Andy has been a better pitcher than Lee so there is no reason he can't top him tomorrow.

Victor Bruno said...

Sweep in the Bronx.

Maryann Davis said...

Texas has seen a good start from one of our rotation pitchers yet. They will get a shock Monday night when the grizzly never quit competitor faces them.

Pettitte loves games like this. He will shine again.

Bert Jackson said...

Pitch well and hit well, that's all it takes. We do that better than any other team.

Giambino said...

Win by a little, lose by a lot. That is WIN METHHOD and that was the first two games.

will-i-am said...

The bats need to contribute a little more than they have but for one inning in game one.

Benny Pake said...

Andy's dandy. Throw those goose eggs Andy.

RLA said...

Lets do it guys. Play like winners

johnsondc said...

Lee was outstanding and Pettitte great, but when you don't give up any runs you can't lose. So Lee beats Pettitte and the Yankees.

Teena/Bronx said...

AJ can be the man and big guy tonight to even series. Who would have thunk.

Thank you WIN METHOD for the way you run this blog. No parent need to be afraid of letting their children read and learn baseball here.

Stat frauds if you have anything worthwhile to discuss, do it openly and use your name. But then again, you people really don't have anything to offer but lies, deceit, and deception.

Gus Papa said...

Tex is out for the rest of year, he went down giving his all. Only Jeter and Cano are hitting and two guys are not a team. It take everyone contributing.

CC, Hughes, and Andy if all three get to start one more time, we will win the ALCS and move on.

RLA said...

Weird as it seems, The Rangers may have more pressure on them right now to close out the series with the 3-1 lead.

Jack Gordon said...

Start it off CC. Wake up Arod, Swish, Posada, Gardner.

sid greenberg/nyc said...

We are going back to Texas to win the next two game.

Alex Antonius said...

CC gutted it out and got the win. A little life in some bats. The pressure is still on the Rangers.

Zhaire said...

I agree, there is more pressure on Texas, plus the Yankees are used to the pressure. Watch for Hughes to come back with a big game.

Bert Jackson said...

CC gave up 11 hits in 6 innings. He bent but never broke. Gutty as they come. Go Yankees.

Yankeeforever said...

We can do this. We have won three straight many times during the season.

Carl Joyner said...

Nice game last night. Good to score early for a change. CC struggled but hung tough. Texas, here we come. It ain't over yet.

Hughes needs to bounce back and pitch his dominant game. Throw strikes and throw them often.

Hans Schroeder said...

After the way the Rangers handles Tamps and the Yankees, I can see them winning the World Series.

George W said...

We were out hit and out pitched, Texas earned the ALCS by winning games and only by winning games. Good luck Rangers.

YankeeMike said...

We went down hard. We were beaten by the better team with the better players.

johnsondc said...

Hopefully the Yankees will make a couple of adjustments for next year to enable the team to win another World Series. Everyone will have their own opinions, but the guys in the know will make the final and right decisions. then it is up to the players to make it happen on the field. Yes 28 in 11.

Tom Loughlin said...

It's going to be a long winter waiting for baseball.

Steve said...

Don't be surprised if you see Montero as the Yankee catcher next year.

Robert Mandell said...

It should be interesting to see this off season just how committed Hal and Hank are to following in their fathers footsteps in keeping the Yankees the best in baseball.

Carl Hooks said...

Yes, it should be interesting.

Kevin Gilchrist said...

The superior AL Texas Rangers get to meet and beat the inferior nl sf giants in the World Series.

WIN METHOD said...

I would think Vazquez for sure and Burnett maybe, would be on the way out. Montero probably will start in AAA and be brought up at the end of May to push back his option year to 2014. If the Yanks go after and get Crawford, who does that push out of the outfield on a regular basis, or do they rotate four guys. Infield is a lock with Tex, Cano, Arod, and the best shortstop in baseball over the past two decades, Jeter. A lot will be on the Yankee plate. Contracts with Pettitte, Mo,and Jeter.

Steve said...

Thames and Brinkman may be out also. Swisher can play first to spell Tex, and rotate in the outfield if Crawford is obtained. Cervelli may be moved if and when Montero is brought up. Bullpen may even be worled on.

Linda Pardo said...

I would love to see the Rangers hammer the Giants in four.

William Mensom said...

Then again the Yankees may not really want Crawford and my just concentrate on pitching. In my view, crawford is not a must and really not much of un upgrade but maybe for his speed.

Gus Papa said...

If the Yankees really want Cliff Lee and acquire him, that may be all that is needed. Anything else would be window dressing.

Cory said...

I have to root for the Rangers, they eliminated us, and only the best can do that.

2011 Prediction: Different YANKEES, Same Result

Warren Hammond said...

Lee and CC were together in Cleveland. I wonder if there is any chemistry or ill will between them.

sid greenberg/nyc said...

Annon... Lets see now, you state, "" 2011 Prediction: Different YANKEES, Same Result"".
That would mean a great chance of making the playoffs, better than any other team in baseball. A great chance at reaching the World Series, better than any other team in baseball. Finally, a great chance at winning the World Series, better than any other team in baseball. I'll be more than happy to live with that.

Bert Jackson said...

Warren, I heard they were good friends and Lee learned a lot from CC.

Paul Hirschman said...

We'll get it all next year. Pride will stoke the team

bigbadwolf said...

Lee should have a field day against a very weak inferior nl team in the WS.

Redsoxfan6 said...

Texas will win the WS.

Frank Sergi said...

The only thing that will determine the WS winner is which team wins four games. To the detriment of the stat frauds, nothing else matters.

Jerry Curcio said...

Bingo Frank, nothing else ever matters but who wins. And who wins determines the best.

Bert Jackson said...

Can you hear the silence of the fools who cry 'big market teams'.

Hans Vogel said...

I'll be rooting for the Rangers. They do represent the superior league.

Anonymous said...

How about that inferior league right now

Steve said...

This years first WS game was a WIN METHOD fans delight and a stat fraud nightmare as the over glorified matchup of the decade between Lee and Liciscum blows up in both pitchers face.

William Mensom said...

We've got another anonymous here. The World Series winner is decided by who wins 4 games first, not 1. He who laughs last, laughs loudest.

Anonymous said...

Just saying, all of this talk of your superior league, you would think the Rangers would have no problem with the Giants.

Stan the Man said...

You got it William. Another stat fraud celebrating one event. what jerks.

Anonymous said...

I'm celebrating a win, the key component to the so-called WIN METHOD. I make no mention of stats.

I fail to see how that would qualify someone as a "stat fraud".

Tom Loughlin said...

Lets see anon. Texas has played @ 16-9 baseball all season. Anyone with half a brain would think they will lose some games along the way. They lost some to the Rays and the Yankees during the playoffs.

YankeeMike said...

Nothing wrong with celebrating a win. It just doesn't jive with your previous anonymous post of how the Rangers should have no trouble with the Giants. Just for an instance..what would you say if the Rangers won the next four straight or four of the next five, or four of the next six?

Anonymous said...

I was making a point that a majority of people on this blog talk of a superior league being the AL. Therefore, a team from a superior league should have no problem with an inferior NL team.

YankeeMike said...

Yes, a majority if not all posters here believe the AL is the superior league. Even with that as a fact proven by decade after decade of World Series play, the AL does not win EVERY WS, just most of them most of the time. One game does not determine the winner of this years WS, you have to win four. You did not answer my question regarding what you would say if Texas wins.

bigbadwolf said...

What WIN METHOD fans believe in is winning and only winning determines the best players and teams. We also believe that stats are the most misleading thing you can use to judge the best. Here is an interesting set of stats to think about. In the nlds and the nlcs the Giants have scored 30 runs and given up 28 in the to games. Pretty close to being 5-5 at best. No, not 5-5, they are 7-3 and have won both series. Wins are the only thing that counts and why baseball is played.

Eddie OConnor said...

When the Rangers win tonight, they go home with home field advantage. That is what you want to do in the two games on the road if you can't win both.

Carl Joyner said...

Girardi and the Yankees have agreed to a three year deal. smart move by the Yankee brass getting this done right away. so far so good for 2011.

Don Penn said...

Hey anonymous, check out the World Series games won by AL teams over nl teams since the World Series began. I think the AL has proven their dominance for over 100 years.

Phil Jenkins said...

Will the Rangers bounce back tonight, or will they make things more difficult for themselves?

Anonymous said...

How about them inferior Giants?

Benny Pake said...

This World Series has the possibilities of being a defining WIN METHOD World Series for the Texas Rangers.

Anonymous said...

True. I remember a WIN METHOD defining series via Red Sox over Yankees a few years ago.

Mike Smith said...

How sweet it would be for Texas to come back with four straight. Didn't the Ranger bullpen implode against the Yankees in game two also?

Linda Rice said...

The Rangers have dug themselves a hole, lets see if they can climb out of it.

Sandro Icavor said...

Anything can happen Linda. Texas is better than the way they are playing.

Teena/Bronx said...

Joe Torre always said the 3rd game of a series is the most important. For the Rangers today, it sure seems that is so.

Maryann Davis said...

Yes, this is a big game for Texas. Probably a must win game.

Dominic said...

We'll see what the Rangers are made of tonight.

Pete H said...

One in the bank for the Rangers. Can even the series tonight.

Harry Stavris said...

Go Rangers, do it again.

Frankie Sergi said...

How much will the Yankees fine tune the team over the winter?

Alex Antonius said...

I love the World Series.

will-i-am said...

Both teams are using their number four starters tonight.

Anonymous said...

How about them inferior Giants?

Ben Baugh said...

The Giants are surely in the catbirds seat after last nights win. Every game is a must win for Texas now.

Gus Papa said...

Lets see if Lee can rebound or throw another stinker.

Robert Mandell said...

Three in a row by the Rangers is not impossible.

Mark Wogaman said...

The Texas bats need to come alive for them to have a chance.

Anonymous said...

Again I pose the question...How about them inferior Giants?

Giambino said...

Nice win by the Giants and a well deserved World Series Championship.

Linda Pardo said...

Pretty dull WS without the Yankees in it. But the Giantas are the best this year.

johnsondc said...

Yes, the inferior nl does win the World Series many time, but not as many nor as consistently as the superior AL. And the AL superiority and consistency has been over almost every single decade since baseball started the World Series.

Anonymous said...

I like to think realistically here. Starting with the 1950's, the only decade with a majority of AL winners was the 90's. Every other decade has been split by either league.

Of course, from your point of view, your including prior to the 40's which skews the totals, in your favor of course. Who is the stat fraud?

Cory said...

Come on now people, the NL wins their share, just far less than the AL.

William Mensom said...

anonymous...I don't think you have your decades right, I am sure someone will check it out.

bigbadwolf said...

Dear anonymous::: One thing we don't stand for here is lying and misinformation. From the 1950's until present there has been six decades. Over those decades the superior American League has won the majority of World Series in four of those decades, the inferior national league won the majority of World series in one decade and one decade was split. That means the AL is 4-1-1 over the past six decades. That defines superiority. You can BS your fake friends in talk forums, but you can't BS knowledgeable baseball fans here at WIN METHOD. You may wish to invest in getting yourself a life.

Erica Johnston said...

Wolfie, thank you for burying another anonymous phony with the truth.

Yankeeforever said...

Why would anyone come here to lie about something that is so easily verifiable. No wonder that talk forums are filled with brain dead fools.

Sharon/NC said...

Also throw in that anonymous, the lying sack of do-do, conveniently ignore the first five decades of World Series competition. How convenient if you want to lie and mislead people. But that is what stat frauds do and how they exist.

Victor Gandozi said...

It wouldn't be so bad if these anonymous frauds came here to discuss their views and opinions, but they only come here to spread dedeit and lies.

Al Ashton said...

Honesty and winning rules, everything else is for fools.

Gus Papa said...

Right on Al. Misleading stats and man made stats are for fools. And those fools are participating in fantasy leagues and lead young fans down the road of ignorance.

Maryann Davis said...

I'm getting itchy for baseball already. Lets start 2011 now.

Steve said...

I see anonymous has fled the scene of his crime after being challenged and caught in his lies and deceptions.

johnsondc said...

Yes Steve, fled the coop with his tail between his stat fraud legs.

Giambino said...

Jeter and Mo are up next. Both will retire in a Yankee uniform.

Billy Morgan said...

It looks like the Yankees are going all out to get Cliff Lee.

Don Penn said...

If the Yankees get Lee, they will be qwfully tough to beat in 2011.

johnsondc said...

Probably really don't need Lee, but if WIN METHOD tells Hank and Hal he is qualified, then we get him.

Erica Nuyens said...

WIN METHOD rules.

Teena/Bronx said...

Just get Jeter and Rivera signed and all will be fine.

bigbadwolf said...

A piece of utter ignorance named Tony Starks on one of the baseball BS forums thinks the Yankees should let Jeter walk. I think Jeter should be contracted through his last at bat by the Yankees. He has been the best player in baseball over the past 20 years.

Steve said...

Starks is also the moderator over there. Makes him extra stupid. He knows almost nothing about winning baseball. He seems to just adore individual stats and players who lose.

Giambino said...

I used to post there years ago. Most there do not know anything about winning. All they do is whine and complain. I left because I found this great blog and couldn't take it over there anymore.

William Mensom said...

What is it that makes so many fans think losing with high individual stats makes a player better than winning with lower stats? Answer...ignorance.

RLA said...

Bingo William. When I discuss baseball with people, and I praise winning over losing...Their response is what an individual does has nothing to do with his team. That response from the stat frauds defines their losing and ignorance in a nutshell.

Stan the Man said...

RLA...you are right. Stat frauds have know concept what it takes for a team of players to win. The stat fraud mentality can't accept winning is more important than an individuals stats.

Yankeeforever said...

One signing at a time and build the best team possible for a run at 28 in 11.

Vladimir Tinzik said...

We must take the banner of World Champions back in 2011. Stop the one time pretenders.

Nick Polito said...

Great blog guys. Love it here and all the posiitive comments.

Vctor Gandozi said...

Jeter, Cano, and Tex win Gold Gloves. Yep, Arod, the hole in the infield didn't.

bigbadwolf said...

The dirt bag stat frauds must be rolling in their crap hearing that the best defensive shortstop in baseball wins yet another Gold Glove Award. That is five now.

Linda Pardo said...

Stat frauds = the deaf dumb and blind of the baseball world.
Congratulations to Tex, Cano, and Jeter.

Alex Antonius said...

First base, second base, and shortstop the best defensive infield in baseball. three guys covering the entire infield but for about six feet at third base.

Deb F said...

LOL, six feet at third base. Arod is good if the ball is hit right at him.

Graham Flashner said...

Funny how the 'inferior' NL team beat the 'superior' AL team in the WS. 2nd time in the last 3 years this has happened. Oddly enough - no comments about that. Wonder why?

Erica Johnston said...

Five gold gloves for Jeter at the toughest position but maybe for catcher. Wow, the best player over the last 20 years.

johnsondc said...

In two of the last three years th inferior nl has been the better league. But we are talking about overall consistncy, decade after decade since the World Series began in the early 1900's. What you trying to justify is a batter going 2 for 3 in a game and comparing him to the other batter who went 0 for 4. In the short time frame one can be better than the other. In the real world, the superior AL has consistently dominated the inferior nl. Live with it. But you do illustrate just how fraudulaent stats can be.

Jeff Wenz said...

Surehanded, yes. Savvy, check. Doesn't throw balls away: OK too, with a hand from Tex. Does that mean best defensively? I think plenty of unbiased Yankee fans will agree that Jeter didn't deserve the Gold Glove this time around. This choice was inertia by the managers and coaches.

What makes him the best in your book, bigbadwolf?

Jerry Curcio said...

Wolfie will bury you, Jeff. In the mean time, in my opinions Jeter has been brilliant defensively for a long time and this year was no exception since he has to cover more ground than ever with the sieve Arod to his right.

Dominic said...

Five rings says he's the best.

bigbadwolf said...

Hi Jeff, welcome to the WIN METHOD blog. You have acknowledged several of Jeters Gold Glove traits. I have seen Jeter be the stalwart cog pin of the Yankee infield for a decade and a half. Jeter has cemented the infield while playing with over a half dozen different first basemen, second basemen, and third basemen during his career. WIN METHOD fans don't really put much if any stock in individual stats or awards. But we are always amazed at the stat frauds, who live by meaningless individual stats and awards, who always attack Jeter when he is recognized for his abilities. We loved when Jeter was kept at the shortstop position when Alex Rodriquez came to the Yankees. All of a sudden the Yankee management did not know baseball because they were intelligent enough and knew baseball best and kept Jeter the far better shortstop at the position and move Rodriquez to third base where Arods inferior fielding would be somewhat less harmful to the team. I watch a heck of alot of baseball and I see Jeter as the best consistently in fielding popups, coming in a slow hit balls, and turning double plays both as the originator with almost always perfect throws to his many second basemen and turning the double plays himself with unparalleled brilliance. Throw in his ability to go into the hole and making superior accurate throws from deep in the hole. Defensive stats in baseball are without doubt the most meaningless and worthless stats ever conceived by the fools who come up with them. The shortstop is close to the most demanding in baseball and the key to a solid infield. The best shortstops in baseball have held their position for long durations because they are the best defensively and usually adequate or better offensively. The best of the best play with any and all team mates at the other infield position and make them look good. The best of the best help lead their team to playoffs, pennants, and World championships. Jeter does all this and does it better than any other shortstop.

Steve said...

The stat frauds on the baseball talk forums are up and in arms while crying and sniveling what Jeter may earn over his next contract. Stat frauds are the fools of the baseball world.

sid greenberg/nyc said...

What is the debate about. Jeter over his career IS the best defensive and offensive shortstop, if not the best players in all of baseball. Yes by leading his team to playoffs year after year, several pennants and five WS titles. If can show me another shortstop who has done more for his team, I will say that player is better than Jeter.

George W said...

Isn't the object of baseball for the team to win? Why then would anyone want ot rate a player on what he does for himself over what he brings to his team? They are no the same.

Jeff Wenz said...

That response took thought and effort. I respect that. I see Mick Kelleher said much the same. I guess my vision of what a Gold Glover should be is different. It's heavier on brilliant plays than it is on being steady and competent. Jeter reminds me most of Cal Ripken as a shortstop in the field.

Gus Papa said...

I go a long way back and you can't build a better nor more valuable team player and winner than derek Jeter.

bigbadwolf said...

Jeff, each one of us will have a different view of what makes a Gold Glover. Many will be similar, with slight differences. Many may be more widespread. There is nothing wrong with that. those are the things that fuel discussions in baseball. I have yet to see anyone explain satisfactorily how losing is better than winning. All players make great plays at different times during their careers. But to make them in the biggest city, on the biggest stage, with the brightest light, and under playoff, pennant, and WS defining moments as Jeter has done, has to be second to no one.
Your views and opinions are welcome here anytime.

Quay Oh said...

Good stuff bigbadwolf. I love coming to this blog where baseball is well thought out.

Hans Schroeder said...

Isn't the Gold Glove measured greatly by some sort of metrics? Yet the stat frauds complain about their own stat frauds.

William Mensom said...

Watched Yankee hot stove on YES network last night and the show contained something directly related to the Gold Glove topic. Both John Heyman and the number one sports writer for the NY Times said that defensive metrics were useless and have no value and that no team or any baseball knowledgeable person used them. They both concurred that Derek Jeter deserves all the Gold Gloves he has received and is the best defensive shortstops in baseball. Both writers also stated that it is true Jeter may not make some of the plays a younger faster shortstop may occasionally make, but that Jeter was still the best on popups, coming in on slow hit balls, turning the DP and making his patented pirouette throw from deep in the hole. Yes the WIN METHOD bloggers are dead on right again and stat frauds are made fools of on the biggest sports and entertainment network on cable TV.

Giambino said...

Thanks William. All of us here know all to well of the stat fraud mentality and illegitimacy.

Pete H said...

So many stat frauds hate Jeter and try to belittle him at every opportunity. Because Jeter is not a high individual stat guy nor a selfish me player the stat frauds are made to look like fools. All Jeter does is WIN, and helps lead his team to WINS.
