WIN METHOD & Baseball Draft

As you know, the WIN METHOD is a highly developed sophisticated interview process, where the interviewee does not know the real purpose of the interview. This process has been developed over several decades and now serves as the greatest evaluation tool in baseball. That fact becomes even more awe inspiring when the teams draft picks are the last or very near the last each year. What make the WIN METHOD so successful, is it looks for players who have the mental makeup and desire to play on the 'big stage and under the bright lights' of New York, and for the greatest team in baseball history. To get a fantastic perspective on the interview process and its value, read Chapter 6 "What Winners Are Made Of" in Jack Welchs book WINNING.
Anyone can peruse meaningless individual stats, and sometimes these gaudy individual stat players are WIN METHOD players. Unfortunately, because of the way the baseball draft is set up, a team cannot draft its top choices. That is why the WIN METHOD is the best tool, it can find players that can help the team succeed that other organizations tend to pass up. Remember, the greatest players are not always the ones with the highest individual stats (fools gold), but the players who can help your team win the most by producing at the right time and under the greatest degree of pressure. Baseball 'Free Agency" (FA), was the final straw that finalized the WIN METHODs development. FA allowed the WIN METHOD to obtain players down the road, that it was unable to select in the draft. Plus, it also gave the option to obtain them when and if they needed them. But it did come at a price. fortunately, the dollar burden was not an issue with the greatest owner in baseball over the past 40 years, the great Mr.S., George Steinbrenner.

Fantastic article WIN METHOD. Ive read the book. Welchs book seems to be based on your WIN METHOD philosophy.

The more I learn about the WI"N METHOD, the better I like it.

More common sense wisdom from WIN METHOD. Love reading this stuff and being in the know of why and how the Yankees have succeeded for the past 15 years.

I had heard of this blog. A buddy told me to come right now, that another chapter has been posted. I read it from the beginning and every comment. I think it's great and will pass the word. and I'll be back for more.

Dave Weber said...

nice to have you back and blogging WIN METHOD, your insight and information is timely and brilliant. thank you

Ken Ross said...

I must have had a WIN METHOD professor in college, because he told me that the interview will be the deciding factor in being hired by a company.

bigbadwolf said...

Those imbeciles from the baseball forum should read this blog and get educated. When you go to the forum there, it is truly hard to tell who is the most inane.

Sharon/NC said...

Our run deficit total keeps growing and we are still playing winning baseball. Poor stat frauds.

Stan Musinski said...

Your years of toil and trial and error are paying big dividends for this generation of Yankee fans. thanks WIN METHOD.

Vincent Gandozzi said...

Great minds think alike. Jack welch and WIN METHOD have very similar outlooks and views. Your interviews must be mind boggleing. Keep it up.

Willie J said...

Rain out tonight. And Wang is going to get his turn skipped for the Redsox series. I want some WIN METHOD WINS.

standout stuff here. love the blog and the knowledge.

Would you please let us know know what input the interviews had on the following players drafted #1 by the Yankees?

2000: David Parrish
2001: John-Ford Griffin
2002: (none, signed Jason Giambi)
2003: Eric Duncan
2004: Phil Hughes
2005: Carl Henry
2006: Ian Kennedy
2007: Andrew Brackman
2008: Gerrit Cole

The jury is still out on Hughes, as well as Kennedy and Brackman. "Sandwich" picks -- including players like Joba Chamberlain -- are not listed here.

But it's not been a very inspiring record this decade, has it?

Long Run said...

I'm patient, Sharon. If the Yankees are in the playoffs with a negative run differential at the end of the year, I'll buy you a cake.

Steve...+50, +100, +300 are all more likely to be associated with winning/playoff teams. (I wouldn't count on +50, though.) Would you care to offer odds on a negative differential being associated with a playoff spot?

WIN METHOD said...

I'll take these queries WIN METHOD fans.
NJ..Every WIN METHOD player drafted is a quality individual who has the integrity and character to help his team be successful. The success of the YANKEE organization since the inception of the WIN METHOD is second to none in MLB. There have been #1 picks of teams over the years who have not had great success, and that would be true for any team in any organization selecting players using any formula, set of statistics or combination of such. The one great irrefutable fact stands, the WIN METHOD has been the best.

LR..Your view has been addressed several times by several very intelligent WIN METHOD posters. You keep missing the point, or you are ignoring it. To the WIN METHOD and its proponents, it does not make one iota of a difference how many runs any team scores or allows. Because none of that determines who goes to the playoffs and beyond. ****PLEASE NOTE..HERE IS THE POINT****WINS, AND ONLY WINS DETERMINES WHO GOES TO AND ADVANCES THRU THE PLAYOFFS. AND ONLY WINS WILL DETERMINE WHO IN THE END IS THE BEST.

Giambino said...

WIN METHOD, some stat people do not have the mental facility to be able to comprehend. With stats they can manipulate their desired result and play fantasy games. In the real world, it is winning and WINS that determines the final outcome and the best.

Bob Behan said...

i am glad I am a WIN METHOD believer and fan. I can't stand fighting for something that loses like contrived stats, and trying to prove that losing players are better than the champions.

johnsondc said...

For neutron jack..you epitomize the stat fraud, you make a vain attempt to depict failure, all the while in fact, the WIN METHOD has produced the most consistent playoff, pennant winning, WS winning team over the time span of its use. You try to pick out several players and base the success of a system on that. The WIN METHOD is based on the team winning and all players on the team helping achieve that goal. There are WIN METHOD players drafted who may never see the major leagues, and for many varied reasons. However, in the end, and in fact, the WIN Method has out performed anything else used by any other team. Winning breeds success and the best. Losing breeds stat frauds and statistical deception.

Steve said...

for johnsondc,,,,your response to NJ was a brilliant oratory and I stand alongside you and success. I try to kick dirt on the stat frauds and their desire for losing and just being nonsensical.

Robert Lynch said...

way to go johnsondc..the WIN METHOD rules, stat frauds are fools.

WIN METHOD said...

You do the WIN METHOD proud johnsondc. As all you WIN METHOD supporters and knowledgeable baseball fans do. Thank you all.

bigbadwolf said...

don't forget everyone, stats prove everything and rule the world, lucky that's only in the mind of the stat frauds. Who else would try to explain that winning doesn't illustrate the best players.

Neutron Jack said...

OK, let me get this straight. I raise a mild question about the success of the Yankees' drafting this decade, and how the interviewing factored into it, and I'm a "stat fraud"? There wasn't a word about individual stats.

This just says that anybody who isn't with you 100% here is against you and gets tarred with the same brush.

Glen Williams said...

This is unquestionably the finest baseball site on the internet. Anyone who wants to learn baseball need to read this site everyday, particularly the comments from the naysayers.

johnsondc said...

neutron jack..I was the one who used stat fraud in my comment to your question. Your question was exactly that of what stat frauds do when their stats are manipulated to get the outcome they desire. You picked a few names and concluded that the WIN METHOD has not been successful. As I stated , that is exactly what a stat fraud tries to do. Massage things to fit their need. The WIN METHOD cannot win the WS every year, and for the first time missed the playoffs. But it still has had more success than any other system used, plus it does not ever try to convolute or manipulate anything anytime. Just try to win more than anyone else, using any contribution from any player to reach the final goal.

Sharon/NC said...

You're to nice johnsondc.

Greg OLeary said...

Some real nice ideas here.

Peter Bauer said...

Welch had a brilliant business plan, and it appears so does joek and his WIN METHOD. If you play for a desired outcome while other only fake it, you will be the best over the long haul. The WIN METHOD is the best.

Charles Lawson said...

I have always believed that stats mean little and do not tell the true value of a player. If you help your team win more than opposing players, and do it consistently, you are one of the best.

Greg, good memory, that was a fine WIN METHOD coup. Spread the WIN METHOD word, guy.

bigbadwolf said...

Another big win, mainly for the bullpen which was impeccable while CC was well below par. With a walkoff HR from Melky, the guy stat frauds didn't want.

Nice to have a day off, but can't wait for the weekend set with the hated tinted soxers, or is it tainted.

TJ said...

WIN METHOD, do you think the Yankees will be looking for any players come July?

WIN METHOD said...

TJ...that would depend on the teams situation come July. Barring any major key injury, it is my opinion right now, the YANKEES will not be looking for anyone in July. However, you never know if and when a piece of candy becomes available that you just have to have,

Walter O said...

Wang pitched against a Philly minor league team today. @90 pitches @70 strikes @7 innings. Is going to Boston with the team.

Erica Johnston said...

If we are not looking for anyone, that should be a good sign.

johnsondc said...

Erica.---I would think you are right. Or we may be just in need of someone to fill a spot temporarily. With our abundance of minor league talent, thanks to WIN METHOD, we should be able to provide from within our own.

Nick Howard said...

With the best minor league talent in baseball playing their way to the majors, the Yankees should continue to be in contention for all the matbles for many more years.
PS..this blog is great.

John Burton said...

My name is John. I am a recovering stat fraud. I've been on the WIN METHOD for four days. Thank you all for helping me see the light and stop being a fool.

WIN METHOD said...

Welcome John. The light is bright, the path is clear, winning determines the best, and you are now with people who realize that.

Vincent Gandozzi said...

Carlos Gonzales said...

I haven't heard that name in a month. An old wound has just been reopened.

WIN METHOD said...

Last nights loss to the bosux was a fantastic example of what WIN METHOD baseball is all about. Fans, go back through the game and look at all the opportunities the YANKEES had to put the game out of reach, but could not deliver WHEN it counted. Look at the bosux going down to their last out and delivering WHEN it mattered most. Baseball is not a game of how much or how many any one or two players can garner for themselves. It is a games of big time players producing WHEN the game is on the line in big time situations. With everyone on the team contributing in some way for the desired outcome, the WIN. The YANKEES had many chances to put the game away, but did not deliver WHEN it mattered. The season is 162 games and there will be many more games to WIN.

RLA said...

At least it wasn't a playoff game. But it was still a horrid loss. I agree WIN METHOD, it is easier losing by 10 than by 1.

Erica Nuyens said...

I'm still in shock. I enjoy games more now than I ever did because of the WIN METHOD.

johnsondc said...

Hope your right Harold.

Tony V. said...

C'mon. Anybody who paid attention in 2005 and 2006 knew that Joba had great potential, well before he was ever associated with the Yankees. There were plenty of stories about how NL and AL scouts loved him, like this one from February 2006(http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2343052). He slid to #41 overall because of injury concerns.

There's a tendency here toward credit where it isn't due.

Howie said...

Andy needs to come up big tonight so the weekend is not a total disaster.

WIN METHOD said...

For tony v....No one ever said Joba was not scouted, almost all players are, to one degree or another. The FACT is he was passed by every team and the YANKEES picked this fantastic WIN METHOD selectee. Sorry tony v. but your BS doesn't float here.

Sandho Icavor said...

Tony V sounds very jealous his team doesn't have the WIN METHOD nor Joba.

bigbadwolf said...

The only draftees that count are the ones you get Tony. Believe it or not there are WIN METHOD selectees that get signed by other teams for any of a number of reasons before the YANKEES can ever get a chance to draft them. Point being, the WIN METHOD has kept the YANKEES at the top of the heap without any top choices, but with low draft choices who are WIN METHOD players.

Corey said...

These are the games that build character. Remember fans, a team is never as good while on a winning streak, and a team is never as bad when on a losing streak.

Ben Kleinhorst said...

Yeh, a win tonight and the weekend isn't a complete wipeout.

Tony V. said...

Damon Oppenheimer gets the credit for drafting Joba. Mental makeup is certainly part of his strategy, but all teams take this factor into account.

The draft sure isn't what's kept the Yankees at the top of the heap in recent years, although some of those picks may yet do so.

Dennis S said...

Maybe Pettittes off pace southpaw stuff will slow the sox.

Martin Holmes said...

Dennis S said...

Andy's stuff did slow the sox, but we couldn't supply any support last night. OH well, the season is young.

Robert Lynch said...

As we move to Detroit, it appears another WIN METHOD selected future star will pitch Tuesday. If Hughes does well, will he stay in the rotation?

Steve said...

Yes, if Hughes does well, I think Wang will be out until he can regather himself and pitch the way he used to. That should take several weeks, and in the mean time give Hughes a big opportunity.

Karl L said...

A rebound sweep would help alot.

Data Doesnt Lie said...

Three questions:

1) Do you plan on asking the NY Daily News to retract this article (http://tinyurl.com/dauj7s) which incorrectly reports that Damon Oppenheimer was responsible for landing Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy?

2) Can you explain the anomaly that the Yankees win games at a higher rate with Alex Rodriguez in the lineup than without, as an inadequate sample size?

3) Can you answer the two previous questions without attacking me or alluding to statistical analysis as a pejorative?

WIN METHOD said...

DDL....1. Only a fool believes what he reads in the newspapers. My name never has, nor ever will be associated with any YANKEE signing. That would inhibit the WIN METHOD process.
2. The YANKEES have consistently made the playoffs, won pennants and won WS without arod in the lineup. With him in the lineup, they have failed to make the playoffs for the first time, have never won a pennant, nor a WS.
3. I don't have meaningless statistics, I use WINS.

Erica Nuyens said...

WIN METHOD destroys yet another imposer with no name.

Data Doesnt Lie said...

WM

1) I wasn't asking whether or not you believe what was written. Clearly you do not, and neither should we. I wanted to know if you are planning on pursuing any legal action in light of the article. Please, read and understand what I was asking.

If publishing your role in signing draftees in a newspaper inhibits the process, how is publishing it a blog any different?

2) Correlation does not imply causation. I believe this blog supports that on some level, but you've missed the mark here.

3) I asked you to address the points I raised without alluding to statistical analysis as a pejorative. Please look-up "pejorative" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pejorative) and try again.

WIN METHOD said...

DDL...Why would I sue, I do not pursue notoriety and do not need money. Plus, lawyers are the ultimate deceivers. There for I will not sue. If you do not know the difference between the newspapers and a blog, that would explain much if not all of your postings. I miss nothing, you miss everything. I teach the fans how to enjoy baseball and give definition to why the games are played. WINS. If you are unable or unwilling to accept that, then you do not need to whine here. Whine on the fool baseball forums, you will have much company.

Steve said...

It is obvious ddl is talking out of both sides of his mouth, does not accept the WIN METHOD, and knows very little about baseball or business. You have much patience WIN METHOD. When I made a fool out of Mike Fracesa on his radio show, he hung up on me. WIN METHOD, you take the time to explain, to anyone, and you have always been right.

Dean Bilosi said...

DDL. you must be very bored or a shyster lawyer trying to drum up business. it is obvious you do not know what you are talking about.

Rick Fields said...

"Only a fool believes what he reads in the newspapers. My name never has, nor ever will be associated with any YANKEE signing. That would inhibit the WIN METHOD process."

But we should take it on faith that this process outweighs/drives the recognized professional staff? Why should we believe this blog over TV and print outlets who speak with and interview actual club officials? Is Damon Oppenheimer just a figurehead?

WIN METHOD said...

Rick, because I have no monetary nor personal gain from this blog. It is a biography of the WIN METHOD idea, concept, and development. How and where it came about. Scouts do their thing, I do mine. When I report to Mr.S. and say I have a special WIN METHOD player. He tells whoever needs to know to draft and sign that player if at all possible. I have no association with the YANKEES, only with Mr.S. Not every WIN METHOD selectee is drafted by the YANKEES, other teams may select a player before the YANKEES get a chance. Take it any way you like it, no one is forced to come here or believe. Some people are just smarter than others and realize the only object of a baseball game, is for the team to win, and over the season, win as many times as possible.

Ken Ross said...

There will be skeptics and or non believers to everything in life. There are some stat people who believe the world revolves around them and their ill conceived formulas. There are people who still believe we did not land on the moon, the world is flat, and the sun doesn't come up in the East. Thank God not one of them is a WIN METHOD fan.

Victor Bruno said...

Let me see now, we have a game in about 30 minutes, and I'll bet all that I own that the team who scores the most runs wins, no matter what any one individual accomplishes or what any stats may be. Yes, that is the WIN METHOD.

Robert Lynch said...

Another sad day yesterday. First and second twice with no outs and nothing. As the WIN METHOD states, it is WHEN you perform that determines the winner, and we are not performing WHEN it counts. Tonight is a new start with an old fresh fact. We need to reach the apex so we can start rolling.

Ed Ferguson said...

Hew Victor, we out hit the Tigers and lost. Those darn stats. You were right, the team that scored the most runs won. But we out hit them.

Andrew J. said...

What a boost it could be if Hughes comes up big and full fills his potential.

bigbadwolf said...

Why would anyone like ddl come to a blog you do not believe in, try to demean the author, and embarrass oneself. They must hate the WIN METHOD so much. They cannot manipulate wins and their stats are proven wrong time after time by the WIN METHOD.

Harold Jenkins said...

I hope Hughes can keep doing what he did last night. He looked very confident.

johnsondc said...

Does everybody understand what WIN METHOD means by wasted, useless runs. Amazing how easy it becomes to perform when you are up by 6 or 7 runs late in a game your pitcher is throwing a shutout. But you can't score any runs when the pressure is on and it could mean the game. 11-0 does do any more for you than 5-0.

Mike said...

johnsondc, how do you know runs are wasted until the game is over? Take Saturday's game against the Red Sox - The Yankees charged out to a 6-0 lead, that's a very good lead and should be insurmountable the vast majority of the time. But the Sox came back, proving you don't know what can happen over the course of 9 innings - no lead or amount of runs is safe until the game is officially over. Thus a team shouldn't stop scoring runs, because you can't predict how many the other team will score - the more runs your team scores, the better chance your team will win. It's only after the fact you can say they were "useless" but you can't say that they were useless in the course of the actually game.

Jamile Jackson said...

You are right on johnsondc. Take 5 of those runs and place then in the right spots against Boston and we could have won two games. If fans would look at baseball from this aspect, they would realize how meaningless stats are.

Sharon/NC said...

Mike...I would rather have a 2 run lead after 8 innings than a 6 run lead at the end of 3 innings. There is a point in almost every game when the issue has been decided. sometimes it is quickly and some times he isn't over to the last batter. If you can't tell the difference, then you must be a stat head. Stat frauds have any excuse or a whine about everything.

Jimmy King said...

If only baseball worked that way, Jamile (or any other sport) -- but it doesn't. Oh well.

Jamile Jackson said...

Jimmy, you are right, it doesn't work that way. And that is exactly why stats are so meaningless and exalted by fools. It is never how much you score or how little you allow. It is when you score and when you minimize scoring against you which translates to wins and that is the reason any sport is played, to win.

Luis Cordero said...

From what I have learned from this blogger, his followers and those who oppose the WIN METHOD, is that those who oppose do not have any ability to grasp fact, truth, and reality. The naysayers seem to live in a world of made up numbers, theories, and untruths, while the WIN METHOD believers steadfastly believe that winning determines who is best. To me, there is no debate. Winning has to determine who is best, no ifs, ands or buts. Or in some instances, butt heads.

Mike said...

Sharon, so then you must have felt pretty good about the 2 run lead the Yankees had on Friday night with 2 outs in the 9th? Was the game decided by that point in your mind? Your comment would seem to imply that. The very simple fact is that the game is not decided until it's over - that's why the rules don't call for the game to end until the final out is recorded. Anything can happen, and I think the first two games against the Red Sox proved this.

Here's another example - May 16, 2006, Yankees vs. Rangers. Rangers climbed out to a 10-1 lead. Should that game just have been called? Were those 10 runs superfluous because the Rangers were ahead by 9? You know what the final score was? Yankees 14, Rangers 13. You just can't predict what will happen before a game ends and how many runs will be needed to win.

Finally, reading through this blog and its comments (many of which I am assuming, based on a consistent style and rhetoric, are originating from the same person), it's disturbing that anyone who levies any sort of disagreement is automatically derided as some foolish "stat fraud" or "stat head," particularly when aimed at someone who never even mentioned stats. The utter disdain that this blog and many of the comments show for an exchange of ideas, reflects a curious defensiveness - people generally don't go out of their way to deride others, as this blog seems to do, unless there's an element of insecurity. With a less dogmatic and contemptuous approach, you might find people more receptive to your otherwise affront on logic.

Now please, respond by calling me a "stat fraud," even though I have said little to nothing about stats.

Neutron Jack said...

Mike's post was entirely reasonable and had nothing to do with individual stats. Yet he gets labeled a "stat fraud." Like I said before, anybody who raises anything even a little different here, that's the response.

Sharon, who wouldn't want the situation you describe? (That's how stock options are priced too, but I won't get into that here. I know what the reaction would be.)

johnsondc said...

mike mike mike, you spew silly statement after silly statement, claim you do not use stats, yet your post is entirely about runs scored and when and dates and so on. I would suppose any poster may have their own idea about when they feel a game is in hand, based on any of many points. Myself, I would never feel a game is in hand until about the 7th inning, and that would depend on score, how the games is being played, high/low scoring, how my pitcher is pitching, etc. etc. You come post here with stupid ideas about baseball, a cite where you are outnumbered 100-1, and you whine when your ideas are put down, mainly because they are worthless. You also, ignorantly claim that the posters here are not real, that would be do in large part to you being a very insecure about your points. Since each time you make one, they are debunked. There can be no exchange of ideas with you, because you use stats, which are meaningless and useless in rating teams and players. Only wins and winning can do that. We here all sound similar because we all believe in the same thing, the WIN METHOD, its concept and its philosophy. Just to add a finishing touch, I do not consider a game over at any point when one swing of the bat can at minimum, tie the score.

Sharon/NC said...

NJ, Mikes post was total BS.

Mike said...

johnsondc, thank you proving my point. Your sense of common decency and thoughtful exchange is truly remarkable and you will no doubt find people amazingly receptive to your most welcoming and intelligent rhetoric, entirely devoid of derision.

I'll leave you all to your self-congratulating for putting down yet another "stat fraud."

bigbadwolf said...

mike..you have taken the first step in the curing process. Admitting yourself to be a stat fraud is a bold step. When you are finished with curing process, come back and join the winners, who know and accept that winning makes for the best.

Neutron Jack said...

Debunking: how does that work here? Something like this.

"That was total BS."
"WIN METHOD is the best, it's irrefutable."
"You can't see the truth."

If you don't buy into the dogma 100%, that's the end of it. No deviation (thoughtcrime) permitted.

Jimmy Helton said...

nj..that's about it, when your in WIN METHODs house, you learn and know baseball with no BS. when your in the stat fraud house, you lie, steal and cheat to your hearts content.

Harold Jenkins said...

Hughes and Joba, back to back very good starts. More, more.

Mike Jorgenson said...

Yes Harold, it would be great if AJ comes up big tonight, the way we know he can. Success breeds success.

Neutron Jack said...

Classy, Jimmy. Classy.

On a separate note, I'd be interested to hear how the Win Method factors into the Yankees' trade decisions, please.

WIN METHOD said...

If the trade is for a significant player Mr.S. is advised of who the team is interested in trading for. He summons me, and let him know if the player is WIN METHOD.

Neutron Jack said...

Do you conduct your interview at that stage, then, WM? How do you get it set up?

Vincent Gandozzi said...

Excellent game from Joba. He's yung and still learning too.

Peter Bauer said...

I got Welchs book from the library last week and read it. Amazing information that almost anyone with a little intelligence can use. I particularly liked the chapter about the interview being the single most inportent factor in a hire. A kid from a no name college can be better suited for you company that a Harvard grad.

WIN METHOD said...

nj..I do interviews throughout the year, at the major and minor league level, college, and have touched upon high school, go to Latin America and Japan. I can get into any ballpark with the credentials I have been set up with. I interview anytime it is needed and have talked to thousands upon thousands of players. There are times when I can tell if a player is not WIN METHOD after two or three replies. No one ever knows it is a job interview or my connection to Mr.S.

TJ said...

Another good win. AJ wasn't really on, but he hung in and got better late going 7 innings. Coke and Rivera in the 8th and 9th were WIN METHOD solid.

Thinking about the rotation, there is a nice mix with a now junk control lefty in Pettitte, the hard throwing lefty in CC, then the three righties all with speed, ball movement, curves, sliders, all in different angles and combinations with Hughes, Joba, and AJ. And don't forget Wang in the recycle bin.
